Depends on if you are talking about Sat-Nav units, or GPS systems.
Sat-Nav unit use the GPS network to esablish your location, and traqck where you are going, but have their own programs for Street direction etc. A GPS unit will generally show where you are, (lat and Long) and the give you an "As the crow flies" pointer to your next waypoint. Good for aerial navigation, or in the outback, but not a lot of use in the city!! |

the only good ones i've seen are the PDA types, where you have the software on the PDA and plug in the GPS reciever, just make sure you can get updated maps for free

Yeah theres a good comminuty for these things called mp3car.com they are mostly about mp3 in cars obviously but they have alot of gps experiance, I'd recommend getting an old laptop and riggin it up that way, then u can do alot more with it and get the bonus of free updateable maps from map monkey or something of the like.

Could always look at a PDA with GPS card and software. Can easily get out of it for under $1000 and you also end up with a PDA to do all sorts of other exciting things. (I'm writing this msg on my PDA while out of the office)

My Father in law got one fitted to his EL Wagon, (VDO Dayton MS5000) with colour screen, and loves it. It comes in very useful for navigating places you aren't familiar with (he travels a bit) and its handy if you don't venture places like the city very often, as you can easily find where you are looking for. Whether they are worth the money is really up to you. But for example a Navman i635 is about $1500 brand new, and I think if you do a lot of driving, it'd be worth it. |

Figure out a way to put all of the above into a box, and be able to see it and install it with no mucking around, and you'll make a fortune. Being able to stick the Navman on your dash with a suction cup, and have it working, (without installation) is one of the big attractions. |

Box it, simple, mini atx case and some thich plastic, add some rivets *walla* one sexy perspex box, mount it in the boot, if ur so inclined use a usb external hdd and /or dvd drive and run that to the front and wack it in the glove box, you can either get a sexy fold out screen and put that in the DIN and again cheaper and easier than the alternative or fab up a plate and remove your DIN's and put it 'over' the old spot, since u wont be using them anymore, its cheaper, its nicer and its got that personal touch. and its WAY more powerful

I use a PDA + GPS + Destinator3 software, great for long trips (keep an eye on my ACTUAL speed, and it warns me of fixed red/speed cameras).
I've got pics, but not handy. iPAQ 5550 HaiCom CF GPS + external ant. Destinator 3 Maps (full Oz) on a 256MB SD card (maps are only 107MB).

Retail prices makes my head hurt. Got my two GPS units off of ebay too. I usually use the CF one, but I've also got a NavMan iPAQ sleeve unit too. I don't like it much, it's 'slower' and doesn't have an external antenna connection. But well worth the moola, as it's been a great system. The last update I got, came with a list of toll roads, and you can set it up to not use toll roads. Last tuesday I had an interview in Balmain, and was staying with a mate out in Penrith, got all the way in and out again without paying a toll - and in under an hour. Took the M4 all the way except for the toll bit - hehe.

For that setup, do u need an external antenna sumwhere inside the car, and is that hooked up wireessly through bluetooth??? Coz i was looking at getting one of these Handhelds With a sat nav system, how much would it cost roughly with the GPS + Software, coz went to Harvey norman the other day and the fella said it would be an extra $500 on top of the handheld itself... |
