hey guys, bought my old man a pioneer DEHP5950IB headunit for chrissy and wanna install it myself in his 96-97 EL FAIRMONT WAGON. now its already got some cheap old vdo aftermarket headunit so dont need much as its all there but wondering if i need to change the wiring loom for the NEW headunit at all?? or if i can just re-wire the current loom to the new headunit..??
Just need to know how to attack this as it has been near a year since i played with a car stereo and i sorta wanna get it right LoL. Any help would be appreciated...cheers boys. |

The VDO plug won't go into the pioneer unit.
You'll need to either purchase a 'aeropro' adaptor and manually wire the head unit in, or if the dash loom has already been butchered you would be better off soldering the new plug to the dash loom. If your not confident with soldering, go buy a terminal strip from Jaycar and screw it all together.

I would just disconnect the old head unit and crimp link the new headunit to the existing wires.

only asking cause i know with wiring the eb headunits up, the colors can be a bit confusing... like red to orange and blue to green(only as examples)
So if i was to write down the way the loom is wired in terms of which color to which color from the vdo headunit i could then use the same coloring wiring system to the pioneer unit?? If that makes sense... |

It'd be pretty close.
Most manufacturers keep this config: Red = Switched 12v, Yellow = Constant 12v Black + Earth Grey = Front Right White = Front Left Violet = Rear Right Green = Rear Left Make sure you don't go pumping in volts where its not spozed to be. Follow the Tech. Doc, and you cant go wrong, When In doubt, Never trust the cars wiring, get a multimeter or a simple globe to test power. Also a little trick is to use a 1.5v battery to find speaker wires, by putting a AA battery to the 'found' wires can define a speaker and or Positive/Negative polarity.

go the Aerpro adapter .. $10.00 bucks .. plug and play .. got one for my Kenwood .. easy as .. and safe .. no burning car down danger like stuffin with wiring ..

You could pump 12v into one of the speaker wires, which would probably blow up one of the modules inside the HU

go out and buy a workshop manual on your car and a wiring diagram inside will show what colours are what

multimeter ftw... cant make a mistake when you know exactly what each wire has on it...
