hey all

was having a go with johno (SVO XR6) at putting in my amp(s) in today, but nothing works anymore

ok, heres the system:

-Pioneer HU w/ single RCA
-6" front splits
-6" rears
-12" sub
-MTX 2ch amp running sub
-4ch directed audio to run speakers

the sub & MTX amp were running perfect, however now we're adding the 2nd amp to run the speakers. we've got splitters off splitters for the 2nd amp, as it has Ch1/Ch2/Ch3/Ch4 or whatever (i not know too much!). we've run the RCA's out, all the power etc etc - except the 'protected' light comes on w/ the Directed Audio amp, and some small amounts of smoke from the MTX amp, although the sub wasn't wired up.

so there is no sound from the amp, regardless of what speakers are plugged in etc. the amp is getting power, the remote wire is kicking in, etc etc - but no noise what-so-ever...

please, throw me some ideas, as i'm preeeety p****d right now! :x

I have noticed that when electrical equipment loses the smoke that runs it they tend not to work.
I would say your MTX amp is stuffed if you've seen smoke coming from it.

Fraser / Johno - smoke = BAD Mmmmmkay :(

Go through EVERYTHING you've touched / tapped into - make sure nothing is shorting etc.

Forget about your signal side of things for now - don't confuse yourself lol...make sure you have disconnected your headunit's internal amp connections from the speakers before you connect your speaker wires to the external amp.

Too hard to say without seeing it all

i tend to agree once the smoke gets out its rather hard to get it back in there again... i hope you have warranty for that mtx amp ? if not pull it apart and see what melted?

hmm - well last night i pulled all the sub/amp etc wiring out of the car, and connected it up as per normal - i.e. just the HU, and ran it to the rear speakers, but no sound - so i'm assuming the HU is f**k on the basis its putting no sound out, with no RCA/amps/subs etc connected - yah? :?

Did you try turning it on or turning the volume up? LOL...
Seriously, check the fader isnt set to the front first...
check the fuse on the back of the stereo, although I guess it wouldt light up the face if the fuse had gone.
The RCA's may still be ok - my bro's speaker outs went on one of his decks but the RCA's still worked so it was cool coz he ran it through an amp.

well if everything works but there is no sound (from head unit) then the i.c.o i think its called is f**k usually caus ya positive and negitive speeker wires have touched which has blown it so if thats the problem long story short its f**k lesson even if not being used tape up all loose ends

maybe the speakers have shorted / blown.

speakers are fickle things.

well, twas the HU! :? have a new alpine deck in, works fine!

the MTX amp that was smoking is trooping along perfectly, and the Directed Audio amp - well, we never had that one working from new, so no idea if it was a dud in the first place, so going to see what we can do about that one in regards to warranty! :P
