Hi Guys, I've had my 12" Sub and Amp setup for about a year now and it is running off my ICC. I have been very happy with it until i started comparing similar setups with friend's wagons and hatch backs. It goes without saying that a wagon or hatch back will produce a bigger bass sound due to the little to no parcel shelf. But I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to boost the sub sound through to the cabin and help it punch through the back seats? I have thought of many things, another sub, mounting an 8"-10'' sub in the parcel shelf etc, but i haven't had a good, relatively low cost idea. (that isn't putting the rear seats down!)
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience they can share?

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience they can share? Damn, was going to suggest putting the seat down. Well the parcel shelf is your best option IMO. It can be quite cheap to do as long as you can make the box yourself. You will have to sacrifice the ability to lug long items through cabin though. There are many ways to go about this...I believe the parcel shelf subs are still 8" in the B-series, so you can get yourself a decent 8" sub and mount it on the top. This will show the 8" sub on the shelf though so could mean higher risk of theft. The other option is to mount the 8" sub under the shelf and have the carpet go over the top...can make holes if you like, but I doubt it would make much difference. Another option is to fit a spacer on the underside to fit a larger sub...10-12". I'd say 10" would be enough and make sure the spacer is thick enough to compensate for excursion, don't want the sub cone/surround to hit the parcel shelf. Build a box around either of the above set up from shelf to boot floor.

Thanks for your advice phongus!
I have talked to local audio "experts" when browsing sound gear and they suggested that new/high-quality parcel shelf speakers should do the trick and that the sub in the parcel shelf won't sound all that crash hot. I do however, like the sound of the DIY bracket/housing. this could be something I can test as my car currently has the housing for a premium sound woofer but is simply carpeted over. I barely use my boot for holding much as i have a four wheel drive and a ute as well!

i wouldnt put a high powered aftermarket sub in the parcel shelf, it will shake and rattle like all buggery and sound horrible

sub is maybe around 1000W max and the amp is 600-650W RMS

well you should definitely be able to hear 650rms
get someone who knows what theyre doing to build a tuned ported box, it should have bit more loudness to it OR go with a 15" sub, it will give more bass down low with the same power compared to the 12 OR do both !! |

I was going to say buy a 15...... having said that though I have an older semi competition head unit (early pioneer split face folding unit) from my old ea I used to run with a 15, now running with a 12 and with enough adjustment, I can make each one almost sound like the other, one will never be the other, but with a good head unit it will blow your mind how much difference it can make to the same speakers when setup right.
you want things like reversing polarity on the fly, massiv eq's & non fading outputs for subs. Not sure what other cool shyte is available these days.

theres a few things you need to look at.
what sounds do you want from the sub? what music do you listen to and how loud? also then what budget do you have? i new "free air" sub will go in and replace the one you have now and could sounds "better" but it all depends what you want and what you think is "better" if you mates have thumping 15" subs then yours will always be different. ive got a comp level 18" sub and it suits my music tastes but makes everything else sound s**t haha

try moving your sub around in your boot , i know in my falcon i had it facing the seat at first and i could barely hear it even turned up. then it came loose one day and spun around and was instantly louder in the cabin

I cant remember the specs on the things exactly, but I know that my amp has the capacity for 2x 12" subs running pretty hard. It is a massive mono-block. I would rather try another option before i went to two subs as the boot space is quite handy for me at the moment. Can anyone tell me more about "free air" subs? and it its worth putting a system in the parcel shelf? I love thumping bass and there is most likely no such thing as too much! I would rather turn the bass down than run on the edge if you know what i mean!
