hey, this looks sweet as but i just have a possibly stupid question. Is your head unit a dvd headunit and are you using that to play the dvd's, or do you use the other part of the portable dvd player that is hidden somewhere to play it?

Also, do you need an inverter for it?

cheers nick

Nah my head unit is just mp3 cd - for the difference in price they wanted for the DVD model I've been able to buy the dvd player, screen, the media player and still a hundred or so left over, plus its all custom :) The screen came from a portable dvd player as I said in the first post, so I still have that to play dvds, but I'll mainly be using the HDD media player I posted about earlier.

I got it yesterday but I haven't got a spare laptop harddrive floating around so I'll have to track down one of those before I can test it out!

Hey mate, that'd be cool if you have one laying around. I have a 6gb one here in an old laptop but I don't want to rob that just for testing because I'll need it to tune my ECU shortly.

Send me a PM when you find the specs and I'll wire you a few bucks for the postage :)

Also if anyone has something around 20-30 gig that they're not using let me know. If I can't find something cheap I might just get a new 40gb drive, they can be had for under $80 now so not too bad

WTF ? Have we had a server crash or something ??
I posted it a few days back. Oh well, here it is again
...

I was going to hang out for a decent sized hard drive before assembling the media player but in the mean time I'm using a 5gig one I pulled out on old laptop.

Installation is straight forward, it comes basically as a circuit board and a case with 2 end caps/plates. The HDD contacts slot onto a connector on the back of the board, 2 screws to hold the HDD to the board, then the slide the lot back into the case, jam the end caps on and put in 4 small screws that hold it all together (it even comes with a little screw driver!)

The whole thing is all pretty small, about the size of a regular ipod (maybe a shade longer)
Here's a few pics, the keys give an idea of the size.

I tried several different video formats and they all play back fine, VCD, XVID and DIVX. The vids I tried were all the latest downloads, the last ep of topgear and a few current movie screeners and tv shows so the codecs in the unit seem to handle the latest codecs fine.

I didn't hook up the audio because I was just testing it on my plasma in the lounge room (vga connecter) but I assume if it can decode the video ok the audio won't be a problem. One thing I did notice on the plasma was a little bit of banding in the picture in dark coloured areas. This pic shows what I'm talking about, although it's more pronouced because it was moving picture taken off the screen, without a flash and pics taken off the plasma show up sketchy looking anyway. It's quite watchable either way and I haven't played with any settings yet which might solve it. It could also be a VGA and/or plasma issue only.

Image

So yeah, there's a quick review for anyone who might be interested. Well worth the money! It also works as an external USB drive ( whole unit powered via the USB so you don't need to plug in or carry around the power adaptor)
