Well, i have had a flip out screen hiding in my room for 12 months almost now. didnt ever put it in the car due to
1) no double din surround
2) annoying lip everyone complains about.

So, i have gone out and done something about it finally!

First out, pull the screen out, and see what needs to be dismantled.

Image

pull everything out of the case and decide what im gonna do with all that crap.

Image

At this point, i went and picked up an old facia from uglybob. which already had parts of it cut out, no worries, most if it was going to be mangled anyway.

It was at this point where i actually made a first version, where i cut a hole out of the top of its origional case, and mounted the screen inside facing out, but when almost completed had to rip it to bits as i didnt fit inside the metal brackets in the dash.

so attempt 2 started like this.

Image

Next up was to use some plaster, same as the stuff they use to put your arms in a cast to add some strength and build up those missing areas. this plaster was 'borrowed on a perminant basis' from year 8 drama, about 8 years ago ;)

Image

the next move was to bog up and fill the rough patchs in the plaster., paint it black, then think, thats not quite smooth. this pic was before the final piece, where i cut up a clear plastic over head projector sheet and sprayed it black for a smooth finish.

Image

install the bastard in the car. the circuit was covered and just shoved in behind the dash, no dramas, cant see it, dont care :D

make up a cover to slip over the tv for when the car is parked so thieving pricks cant see it.

Image

here is how it looks without the cover, just gotta touch a few bits up, and clean it a little, few dirty patches showing.

Image

showing how the tv looks at night. note the cool blue buttons, which were already that colour, very nice to match my dash. :D

Image

finally, just a distance shot to show how it all looks. and to show off the newly painted black dash. :D

Image

The tv had an inbuilt free to air recieved, however i have been unabled to pick up reception at this point, have to goto an area with good reception and try tune it in. in my mates car where this tv was origionally we could get decent reception.

havnt got a picture from the outside, but at night time it lights up the car nicly like a christmas tree, so probably an idea to keep it switched off around the policemen.

So the next step?

use the video in plugs to hook up the xbox for the ultimate in car super fun happy time having car trip.

the xbox will mainly be used for mp3 storage, and occasionally for movies on long trips for passengers and games if they get bored.

will keep ya's updated if that ever happens.

comments/opinions?

Mate that is awesome. I thought about doing something like that, except the screen coveirng the headunit as well so it kept inline with the Falcon curves. Looks fantastic, dont know if you can do anything about the elngth, but maybe some clear coat on it? To match the dash more.

yeh, the top left corner now sits about 3mm lower than it should, no idea why, i cant even push it back up that high.

if i can ever be bothered i might try fill it in with something to make it look as if it matchs

as with all the other little bits that dont look quite right, on the to do list. with a cbf ranking haha.

Nice work. A fair bit of effort looks to be involved. I'd love to have a TV in the car.

I'll post up in detail about what parts I use and who I use (BPT Motorsport) and cost.

I'll make the cost accurate and not s**t anyone with prices less then I pay.

I'll get it dynoed in the end as well.
