After months of all talk and no action I finally got started on my boot install on Sunday. It's pretty early days yet but I thought I'd post some pics up as I go along and see what you guys think - I'd appreciate your suggestions (but please have mercy!!!)



The sub is going to sit in the r/hand wall. It will be interesting to see how it sounds as it won't exactly have a proper enclosure behind it but will be using the cavity between the MDF wall and the side of the boot as an enclosure of sorts. I'm not after competition quality sound or anything so hopefully it will be ok. I was thinking about maybe lining my little 'enclosure' with some kind of insulation if it would sound a bit better.



My brand new Alpine MRP-M650 monoblock (cost price, woo hoo!) is going to be mounted on the same panel as the sub towards the back. The Sony 4-channel is a bit bigger so will have the left hand wall to itself.



The left hand panel is going to be angled backwards, but not as much as in the above picture! The right hand panel will be at 90 degrees.



My boyfriend and my dad have been pretty amazing helping me out and giving me ideas but I am proud to say I did pretty much all the woodwork myself. I owe you guys a huge thanks for convincing me to go the DIY route - heaps cheaper and definitely more satisfying

are u going to FG the back off the sub to make a box.

Wish I could put my subwoofer there, except I got my factory amp in there.

What ever you do, don't put the sub in without a proper box!!
Make a back for the box out of mdf and fibreglass.
It will sound like s**t if the back is metal.

Othere than that it looks good my sisters boyfriend done the same thing but because he has no gas in the EF he put itb were the gas tank sists

Do you mean just line the side wall behind the sub with mdf/fibreglass or make a proper sealed box to somehow stick back there?

If its not a free air sub, it needs the sealed enclosure or sound quality will be s**t or non existant.

Set up looks like it will be nice though, i havent seen many before with the lpg tank in there.

Only problem with making a sealed box is I'm going to be pretty tight with room back there. The sub is a Pioneer 12" so I don't think I'm going to be able to make a box as big as the recommended enclosure size. If I did make a box it'd also have to be long, narrow and generally funny-shaped.

So I guess the question I'm asking is how important is it to make an enclosure to the recommended size?
-- I know I won't be getting the best sound if I don't, but how noticeable will the difference really be (especially since I am also installing 6x9's)?

My preferred option is just to line and seal up the existing space I have behind there as best I can.

I'm definatly no expert, but having just steel behind it wouldnt be a good thing i wouldnt have thought, itcan flex and vibrate heaps.

As for size and shape, i know size will affect it, how much i'm not sure.

Yep that certainly makes sense to me, I've been thinking all along to put something in there (on the steel wall but also on the backs of the mdf) but just not really sure what.

Another MDF panel might be ok attached to that side wall, I've also been eyeing off the fluffy stuff from inside the Pioneer's factory box

Next step is to visit the auto upholsterer to get them carpeted. Then I get to sort out dynamat and probably fibreglass for that metal panel behind the sub, and wire it all up...

Update: carpet is done!!
