Just a quick question about having a carputer - is it legal to have a screen visible by the driver? A friend of mine said that it is illegal, but I don't see why..? I know that the sunvisor LCD's are illegal, but you're allowed to have a screen mounted in the dash aren't you?

BTW, I've already fabricated a TV into my dash, but before I start installing a new computer/VGA monitor etc etc and spending lots of money on parts, I just wanted to get a bit of clarification on the subject.....

Thanks guys!!

Yeah i have heard 2 versions.....

1. Screen has to be wired so it turns off after the car is >5km/h

2. screen can only operate when handbrake is up...

The driver isn't allowed to see it, nor any OTHER drivers. Basically precludes using them at all when the car is moving.

Although hooking up the handbrake sensor from the HU to the cig lighter socket 'fixes' it.

It is illegal to have a screen viewable by the drier when the car is in motion and it must be fitted to the handbrake switch.

But thats just the law.....What actually occurs is much different...

Thanks for all the info guys.

Well, i'm basically just going to be running the computer for music and the occasional dvd/tv for the passangers. The screen will only be showing the playlist of the music anyway, so it should be fine I think.

It will be out out of view from the outside of the car, so unless a cop actually hops in, he won't know it's there.

Thanks again..

You're allowed to have stuff like navigation systems viewable. This introduces some ambiguity into the laws.... just make sure the carpc runs GPS!!

Yeh I was about to say - what about GPS?

What if the screen is displaying telemetry ? Ie, RPM, Engine Temp, Air Temp, etc :)

Thats true, i dont think the leglislation goes into detail, i'm sure you could argue that it is vehicle/engine relevant information there is no problem, but if you had a movie playing i think you'll find they'll be less than impressed.

At the end of the day cops can (and in my case have) book you for perfectly LEGAL things and the onus is on your to prove that your stuff is right.

Try arguing with a cop about how loud your car is even if it's stock exhaust....

Yeah do exactly what some of the guys here have said. Just put a switch on the handbrake cable, to bypass it. Mines annoying at times, cause i know my switch is on, when the Handbrake light on the dash comes up, even when its down, but it lets me know that its up. I've just hiding a 10 A Clipsal mech under my gear boot, so i only have to lift it up and switch it, for it to *not* work, if the constabulary ask...
