Basically, I want to compete with the wife. Bought her a brand new top of line Hyundai Elantra and the premium facotry MP3 sound system makes me jealous as buggery as it kicks!

What do you think I need to spend on standard system to make sound like that?

Am thinkin a new MP3 deck of course, leave the front speakers as are, I have a old old set of expensive infinity 6x9's that used to crank in my old XE 10 plus years ago, do you think they'd fit and work OK?

Now I'd reckon I'd put an 8" sub in the available hole, but am unsure for an amp and whether it powers the sub or the rears or one of each for both? Maybe a high power output deck can runs the infinity's and an amp for the sub?

My sound system experince is 10-15 yrs old and I need updated advice on a beer budget, say $200ish head unit, $100ish sub and I have an old amp but it whines badly, not sure of budget to replace?

Help and advice please

New mp3 HU will set you back $300+, i would change the front speakers either with some nice 6" coaxial 2 ways or splits. Use the existing rear speakers as there is work thats not needed to install the 6x9's seeing your using a sub anyways. Use a boxed sub and run if off 2 channels (bridged) on a 4ch amp and the other 2 power the fronts. The rears can be ran from the HU but fade to the front so that the rears dont over power and ruin the sound by distorting.

personally i would recommend getting a decent head unit and some 6's for the front, then getting spacers/cutting holes in the back for your 6x9's

as for using a sub, i think with your budget you will get the best sound from the set up above, then later when you have more money get the sub, as for a sub you will need an amplifier (which is the expensive part) and then get sub with an enclosure as oppose to having the 8in free to air
