I was thinking about moving my battery from engine bay and installing a optima battery in the boot. Just wondering if anyne has done this, and the best way to go about it ( where to run cable, what size cable, etc )

if u do buy the black battery boxes to mount to the boot and run the BIGGEST cable u can find

as u get voltage drop over distance and the bigger cable will elimate this
run the cables on the drivers side ( away from fuel and brake lines

4 guage power cable will be fine mate. I have a similar setup. Just front wiring into a distribution block (Saves running multiple cable to the boot) then run a single 4 guage cable thru the firewall down the drivers side into the boot where ever you decide to mount the battery. Doesnt have to be in a sealed box but better if it is in a box incase....being a gel/dry cell the optimas dont vent any fumes so they dont need to be in a sealed enclosure.

Disco Frank is on the money there with the big a** cable..

About running them though, you're meant to run them away from signal wires.. So speaker wires on one side, and power on the other.

Cheers

I'm running the cable under the wagon... easier to get into the cavity.
thicker the cable less resistance for the power or something isn't it?

yes thicker cable = less resitance

But unless you are drawing alot of current no point spending s**t loads on huge guage cabling...loads more expensive to go 2, 0/1 and 0/2 guage cable espescially over that distance plus being so big its a bigger pain to install..

Running under the car I wouldnt do ... will get more interference from moving parts...trans, diff, road noise and exhaust plus the heat from the exhaust if u have it down that side will increase the resistance if the cables close enough...so then your losing what you gain by going bigger cable.

If you are running gear that will draw some serious juice not just a cheap everyday listening system and the starter than no bigger than 4 guage is needed...any bigger draw and you may as well spend the extra for a boot mounted 2nd battery setup with short 0 guage from batt to distribution and really short power cables to your amps. my 2 cents anyways

Thanks guys for the help, i want to do it to clean up the engine bay. Step 1 move battery, step 2 relocate header tank around headlight giving me 2 clean strut towers as i dont have any airboxon the passenger side , mine sits on top of motor. Just a quick question , do you run the cable from battery back to engine bay to the starter motor and run all other wires of the starter motor. Or should i run them to something else first and only have one wire on the starter motor.

ive been keen to do this mod as well...but my problems are...
1. The starter is on the passenger side, so should i put the battery on the passenger side in the boot, run 0 gauge to the starter, then 4g over to the drivers side to power everything that used to go to the battery there? does anyone have pics of jobs they've done before?

i was thinking it does not matter which side of the boot it is because you can always swap sides of the car under the back seatwith the cable.

Suppose so...my concern is more with once you've run the power to the starter, finding a neat way of joining all the power cables from the drivers side to the new power? I'd been thinking of running 4g across the bottom of the firewall, and having a distribution block in the drivers front guard where the compressor once was...

yeah a distribution block is the easiest but also the best... just mount it nearby where your battery originally was so you can easily wire it all together

i was talking to an auto lecky today and he said not a hard job but very time consuming. He told me to get a post cable joiner i think it was and mount it in the engine bay and then run all the wires off it.That way any problems that may happen is still in the engine bay and not somewhere in the car. Also run a big earth cable off the block to chassis and another one from the battery to the chassis. He also said to run the wire in condute as an extra safety measure.
