I decided to spend a bit of cash on a new UHF CB for my EL Fairmont wagon.
Was looking around at GME, Uniden and also Oricom then settled on the Uniden UH7760NB The retail for $349 but I got mine brand new including postage for $265. I love the idea of the LCD display on the mic so I can hide the box and the only visible part will be the mic and the cord. http://www.uniden.com.au/australia/p_uh7760nb_index.asp For the aerial I settled on the GME AE4018K2. It's a lightweight aerial that will be perfect for the GME Z bracket that I will be using. It has a gain of 6.6 dBi and usually retails for around $115 but I got mine brand new for $99. http://www.gme.net.au/products/antennas/land-477-mhz/AE4018K2 What UHF set ups have people got in their cars? Cheers

The scanner option is always a cool feature too. With mine I can program scanner frequencies into it too. Looking forward to putting it in my car over the weekend when I get a bit of spare time.

Here is the finished product...
Everything hidden away with just the mic and cord showing. The box is hidden just under the Alpine head unit. Power via the positive on the cigarette lighter, Earth via the head unit mounting bracket screw The GME aerial attached to a stainless steel GME Z bracket

Why not opt for an on-glass antenna? Far more stealth, just looks like a mobile phone car kit.
Unless you're trying to beam 30km across open land - you're better off going with a low gain antenna.

I did look into getting a glass mount aerial but I've seen first hand how poor their performance is so I opted for the GME aerial I have on the car now.

It all depends if you're using the radio is built up areas or open spaces. I've had good experiences with unity gain antennas in the city.

My aerial and UHF combination have a range or around 18 K's. The glass mount aerials are great in cities and suburbs but out here where I am with the vast open flat spaces I found the aerial I have to be the best option.

I never actually ended up using it as a remote face unit. Not a bad unit. I am replacing it with an Icom IC-400 pro... to be programmed to 80 channel.

Most places will already have them upgraded to 80 channels straight out of the box. If not I believe you can contact Icom and they can direct you on how to expand it for free,

I will not be able to confirm whether or not it was successful until I can get access to a UHF unit that was factory upgraded to 80 channel... this will be on the next FM sydney meet
