I'm trying to fit 2nd hand stereo system (no instructions) into my 1995 Gli Ghia. It works but after 10min it gets too hot to touch.

Buy some cooling fans mate and mabe you need to mount it properly so that it disperses heat better. Either that or you are using it too hard.
So what i would suggest is to go to Jaycar in the City. (thiers one on anzac highway). And buy some CPU cooling fans and mount them near the amp so that it cools the amp down and will also get rid of the excess heat which is being produced. Failing that you might just need to put a lesser load onto the amp, so that your not overpowering it in the first place. See how that goes. Andrew

my stereo is installed properly, but after a while of usage it gets quite warm (front is aluminum),
using any type of fan will produce a lot of noise when the stereo isnt on, keep that in mind. a single low speed 90mm fan should create enough airflow to keep it cool, but you may want to check out your wiring job, if youve got something wrong that may be the cause of the heat.

most amps create heat, I know mine have 2 internal fans each and are in an enclosed area with a 80mm fan sucking the air out, it brought down the temp by about 15 degree after i installed it, it now takes a very hot day and a long time in use at high volume to crank the heat and cause them to shut down, I had my 2 channel (subs) at about 79 degree once, gotta love digital read outs

Have you got all the wiring properly connected? Sometimes the wrongly connected wire can cause the head unit to overheat and malfunction, doubt it will catch fire, you could blow a fuse in the head unit.

it possibly could be cheap circuitry?
cheaper circuits create more heat.

what would you connect the fans to? like wiring etc? and how would you go about it? as i'm suffering the same sort of problem, my amp is in the boot lying on the floor under the parcel shelf, behind seats, my car is red so it heats up pretty easiely and now that its summer down here, and we've had like 35 degree days, well as you can imagine it gets pretty hot down here, so i need the fans i think, i reckon that'll do heaps of help, it takes like an hour for it to over heat and shut down, its a Cadence amp running a sub. So yeah, any help on where to connect the fans to would be excellent

Best way would be to hook up some fans through a relay, which switched to on by using the blue wire from your deck as a trigger wire. That way its only on when the stereo is!

so just buy any relay or a particular one? and where does the power come from to power the relay itself? the blue wire is the antena wire isnt it?
