Well I went to bunnings the other day to get some perspex for my boot install. I was highly surprised to say the least, they wanted $90 for a small sheet of it... why is it so expensive?

Because it's expensive... Have you looked at glass prices? I haven't looked for myself, but i've been told that glass can work out cheaper and is much more scratch resistant.

I would imagine glass is alot harder to work with though.

Yeah, but you can get the glazier to cut and drill it if you already know what you're going to be doing with it..

get glass, its better, harder, scratch resistant, and vibrates less i would imagine, surely youd need thinner glass than you would persp.

hmm taht can be a tough call...glass does have less flex so can be sturdier but in some case you want a lil flex...as no give will lead to cracking if its pushed to its limits...

glass is not harder glass has a tighter molecular structure than Acrylic, hence why glass is brittle!glass has s**t sound response compared to acrylic.bunnings is expensive because it is a rare product for them to stock therefore jacking the price up. look in the yellow pages there will be a plastics shop nearbye that does boat windows.if you are using it for a boot install there is no reason for it to be in constant conact therefore scratching isn't a problem(although i do boat windows and work with the stuff everyday and rarely scratch it it isn't that scratch prone at all).

Wouldnt this tho make it more dense tho in what ya saying dude .. and yeh agree glass setups result in sounding worse

Yes it is more dense thats why it has less reflex than acrylic

Well i dunno about you guys but i wouldnt exactly want a piece of glass sitting infront of my subs in my boot.
Plus the lighting characteristics of glass is different to what you can easily achieve with perspex with a simple neon, can light the whole sheet to a nice glow.

what thickness mate? comes in 6,8,10.12,15,20,
i'd say 15mm would be sufficient for that,and would cost $50 or even 12mm at $40. |

pitty you live in NSW.... i have a sheet 1200x2400 lying about at home... would have been able to cut you off a chunk... but i agree with the comment of boat window supplier... they will cut to size as well
