Hey Guys,
I've decided to port my sub boxes to get the sound and loudness im after, how do you know what size to make the ports and how long they should be? I will measure the exact volume of the boxes sometime tonight. Im running two Pioneer 12" TS-W306C's. Cheers,

I used bean bag beans and a 10 litre bucket to figure out the volume, its 49L.

Ask someone with experience with those subs to tell you the best size ported box and port dimensions. Pretty sure it's been asked a few times on the MEA forums.

Hey Stone,
Yeah i had a look on there and they did say that ~50L tuned to 35Hz was about the right size, but i didnt see any port dimensions there. In any case, i used that info and plugged it into a few port calculators, for a 3" dia prt it reckons 6.44" long, for a 3.3" dia port it reckons 8" long. But one program recommends a port diamater for you, which was bout 3.8" and 11" long "http://www.carstereo.com/help/Articles.cfm?id=31". Im tempted to go to bunning's, buy some MDF make a 50L MDF sqaure box and try every port combination above in varying lengths and finding out first hand what sounds best, but that's a bit extreme aye.

That is the best way to find the right tuning for your music tastes.
Just remember that a narrow port can restrict airflow and create port noise. So wider is better as long as you can fit the length of port required. |

So wider is better as long as you can fit the length of port required. Stone's got it. The alternative to bigger long ports, is multiple narrow short ports. There's several box design programs around (some free others not), that'll help you immensely. WinISD is a good easy one to start with (and free). Requires you to find the specs of the sub.
