Just to clarify things a little, cars don't have an "EARTH", they have a "GROUND".
Earths are for AC sysytems and Grounds are for DC systems... I had a quick skim through the links provided and saw nothing regarding the starter motor, I am pretty sure that the starter motor WILL run backwards, it was already mentioned about the blower motor but any motor needs to be thought about regarding direction cjanging to a negative ground....

If memory serves me right any of the slightly later, negative ground, starter motors will bolt in if thats the case. My one, from a Pursuit 170 fitted ok.
Cheers, Paul

You'll find the existing starter will work fine - reversing polarity on the armature also changes the field windings.
If you're worried about this, pull the starter and test using jumper leads.

I am pretty sure that the direction will be reversed, I know for a fact that on an AC motor that you need to reverse the armature or the field but not both to reverse it but on DC reversing the polarity of supply will reverse the motor...

The armature will reverse polarity, and so will the field windings, so the direction of rotation will not change.

snap, you are correct in respect to series wound motors, it has been many years since I did dc machines, BUT, starter motors are usually permanent magnet motors so they have no field windings unlike series motors which you were referring to and so with a permanent magnet motor a reversal of polarity WILL reverse the motor which is how power windows reverse and power aerials etc.....

Falcon starters are series/parallel wound motors, i.e. the fields are in parallel to each other, but in series to the armature.

I will have to take your word on that one but what about the really old ones like the post was about?

All the starters I have seen over the years have been permanent magnet style...

XK to AU starters are interchangeable.
