G'day everyone
I just wanted to know whether a 400W Max 4ch amp would be sufficient to power 4 speakers. here are the specs AMP - Clarion APX400.4 400W Max 50Wx4 @ 4 ohms RMS Speakers - Clarion SQR1630R 6inch 280W Max 55W RMS reason i choose an old amp is because im getting it for like $60 bucks and brand new was i think $400 Thanks Guys |

I have had the same amp, they do alright.
Fisrt, ignore max watts, its an advertising gimic. {USERNAME} wrote: AMP 50Wx4 RMS Speakers - 55W RMS Note the RMS on each, your amp is near perfect for the speakers in terms of wattage matching.

is it true that you should either match the wattage or the wattage on the amp should be higher than the speakers

If the amp wattage in rms is higher than the speaker's rms, then you risk blowing the speakers, a little bit dont hurt, but then you also risk your SQ.
Matching it is the best for all round performance.
