6.5" won't fit into the front existing holes. They can only fit 6". You can make up a space out of MDF and fit it in that way. In saying that, my 6.5" speakers are held in by one screw and door skin jamming it into the frame......not professional but it works hahaha.
Factory tweeters are located on the top of the dash in either corner near the end of the A-pillars. You can see them when you stand outside your car and look down on the windscreen on either bottom corner. If you want to mount the tweeter somewhere else you can either customize the A-pillar to suit or you can mount it on the Electric Mirror screw cover plate...they are triangle covers which cover the access to the electric mirrors. phong =P~

Or would it just be easier to put something like this in?

I'm sure both will fit, or made to fit. Just depends if you want to use a spacer or not.

But would that be sitting in the factory position with the grill back over it? and actually look stock as that's my main concern

Could someone recommend a set of splits under $200 that would give good sound but still fit in the factory speaker position with out modding?

Yes it should be able to still fit behind the stock grill. Mine does and seems to sit quiet well, it has clearance so should be fine...but I haven't put mine in properly so I don't know how much clearance there would be if a space is in it. I have seen many people fitting 6.5"s in just fine. It will look stock with the door trim grill over the top . You can try JayCar splits, they seem to be good but not sure as to how much they are these days. They are value for money so I have heard. phong =P~

I have 6.5" splits in my El and all it took was to roll the edges of the mounting hole in slightly to allow the massive alloy baskets that my splits have to fit in.
This allows me to fit the larger diameter speaker but with no cutting as I can refit the originals if I wanted to as all the metal is still there.... Just watch the depth. Personally I would stay away from Focal, I have seen the alloy baskets bend and the tweeters are very, very, very bright and hard sounding.....

With rolling I mean you use a small shifter and bend in the metal all the way around the hole so effectively you have a rolled in edge allowing a larger basket to fit. I hope that this helps....

hrmm... i made a big post back to you earlier and its gone. :S
i'll sum it up in short. crossovers will fit neatly above the radio and under the centre aircon vents. check pic in my post, i think you can see them in one. i put my splits on the cowl panel under the dash and followed pyroays tute on positioning and pointed them at the opposite side headrest. the sound image is perfectly in front of you and sounds very good. cant remember if i added anything else. |
