Thanks the sub box is the real piece of work, this stuff is reasonably stealth and most people will never know whats taken to fit it in.
Sub box is taking a lot of thought and little fiddly jobs.

mate to move all that wiring, all i can say is dedication to the max. Can i ask as you would be the one to ask, does fibreglass do the same job as mdf. Which one is better.
Cheers mate. Your car is awesome and looks good in INCAR. You know they should have shown some of these pics aswell to show what it means to win a sound quality tournament and what it means to earn the victory. Like the gold bmw who looks like they paid to get it done. No offence meant if they did it themselves. cheers mate. |

Thanks , the gold BMW is a paid professional install as are most show cars, very few people do a show car themselves because of the time and effort required. Also it took a lot more time to be able to have a show boot and one i can use on a daily basis as well, it is a lot eaiser to just make a show boot & have it completely unusable. There is a fair bit of time and effort to do everything properly, but i ghuess that what stands a really good system out from a 4hr install job.... It takes a hwile to get even simple thing done e.g. In my car kickpannels look plain and you dont really notice them but they took 3 x full 12hr days to make, cutting and joining wires and re-locating everything. At the end of this build up i'll post up approximate time for each task. There is a fair bit of time spent figuring out how to approach each bit, & then doing things slowely to see if they will work before you have destroyed the car. It is a lot eaiser once yuo have done it once to copy for another car. In answer to yuor question Fibreglass has it's pro's and con's PRO It can hold together any shape and comes in a range of forms. Glass Mattnig Glass re-enforced bodyfiller (handy but expensive) Bodyfiller. - Strong - Lighweight CONS - Hasle you have to mix it all together and if you dont get the right mix of resin and hardner it sets too hard to quickly or not at all & your left waiting all day. - Fiddly to work with, you need to mix it up, wear gloves and it sticks to everything. - You cant stapple to it so when you cover something with carpet you cant pull tight and staple it unlike MDF. - Once set it it hard to trim (not good on saws). I obviously use a combination, you can see in the midbasses example, MDF is easy to shape around the speaker and you dont risk getting any on the cone, also large reasonably flat surface. for the underside i needed it to shape to the body so fibreglass was the obvious choice.

yeah cos i made some pods over a year ago now, and i used mdf and bog. They are heavier than if i did them out of fibreglass but i find it a lot easier. At the moment i am making some pods for the rear and am using mdf and will smooth off with bog before i stick the vynal on.
Oh yeah. In INCAR it says that you have 350wrms going to the front. What is the sensitivity of the front speakers because i thought if it was 92db, your hearing would be f#@k$d, would it be 89db or lower. Cheers mate. |

Bog is eaiser to work with but has no strength
2 x 350rms is the power from each amp in that configuration, but i run the gains very low to maintain a low noise floor It's more like 200rms per side at the most + 50rms to tweeter. the Dyn's sounded pretty good running passive in the new car with only 130rms per side, but i am now running semi active with 260rms per side, again with the gains down very low.

Part 3a - Subbox
Box is a combination of 25mm MDF and 18mm MDF and is approx 2 c/f Initial Design The template box out of Lisa's old real estate signs No space for the back of the speaker so i cut out the sheet steel and has a re-enforced steel plate welded back to add strength Sub in place <IMG SRC="http://pic14.picturetrail.com/VOL555/2287184/7149236/96738079.jpg"> <IMG SRC="http://pic14.picturetrail.com/VOL555/2287184/7149236/96741690.jpg"> 12mm Bullet Proof Glass <IMG SRC="http://pic14.picturetrail.com/VOL555/2287184/7149236/96741722.jpg">

Not a bad plan at all! so the subs are actually screw on, on the inside of the box, pointing out, rather than just screwed to the outside of the box? I guess this saves on a bit of depth right?
What's the internal volume of that box? more so, Do you calculate the volume taking in the sub volume as well? |

Normally you account for subs volume (i.e. 12" takes up about .2 c/f) but in this case there is nothing inside the box. There will be some fancy stuff mounted there shortly but it wont take up much space.

Is it at all possible that this install could be as good as your winning stereo?

Install wont be as flashy because most of the rest of the boot will be plain carpet as it has to be usable, however the sound will be right up there.
In it's present trim it already sounds better but i am doing some upgrades to mine to keep it moving. - IDMAX12 sub awesome SQ sub - Dyn 3 way front stage with the 8" midbass instead of the 7". - Run Fully active with more power to front stage and sub - Better processing from PXA-H700 than the headunit DAC At the end of the day it doesn't worry me which one sounds better, my aim is to create 2 awesome sounding cars that are right up there and to prove to people that my one isn't a one off fluke.... I have spent a lot of time recently on another guys car (Mazda) and he will be up there for SQ too.
