I know many of you are going to laugh at my question but I really need some assistance.
I purchased an amplifier and am attempting to connect a large ring terminal to 8ga power cable. I thought that maybe the metal needs to be compressed around the cable so I tried "squashing" it with pliers but the metal is just too strong. Are these connectors supposed to be soldered? If anyone can assist me I would be very grateful.

I wouldn't have the foggiest idea how to solder so I think I will just be crimping. |

Best bet is to take your cable and crimps to an autoelectrician and get them crimped. Soldering is a nice have, but isn't absolutely necessary.
The autoelectrician should be able to advise on all of this anyway.

Vicegrips and solder did the job for me
Soldering is a piece of piss, it's a handy skill to have. Go and buy a cheap soldering iron and a roll of solder and practice on spare wire and s**t. It's far from hard.

Soldering terminals and large cable can be difficult if you only have a low powered soldering iron, as the large amounts of metal involved act as heatsinks and make it difficult to get everything upto soldering temperature.
If you're getting an iron, figure out what you're going to do with it. electronics (small) only 25w or a variable iron car electrics (big) car audio only 50-60w or a variable iron BIG s**t go a bigger iron. I've got a 60w max variable iron as I do alot of electronics work as well as car stuff. I also have a butane gas iron (and it's also a blower/blowtorch) that at full power is equivilent to 120w. It's also portable (cordless) so it's handier at times.

lookin at them terminals i would say its definitely a hammer job, another good option is a bench vice??? but then solder her up if you can, but as data_mine said you need a decent size iron to do anything above 12ga

i wrecked a set of crimpers crimping terminals onto 4Ga wires.
i cut a slot across the top of the "tube" to make it easier to fold up - kinda worked.

i used some old standly heavy duty wire cutters. They are in every mans tool box. I just used the cutting edge to crimp them.
For my sub connectors i solidered it and soldering isint hard. Maybe i can make a doco or some thing on 'how to solider'. I have a few different ways for different things that maybe be useful for everyone.

Yeh
ive always used either a hammer, or a vice, and then added some solder around the edges for good luck. Ive got lots of crimping tools, but unfortunately none big enough.

What does everyone think of the doco would make a great first doco for me.
