Hey guys, with my new head unit its got builtin crossover and i am running it at 160htz. I put it that high because that speakre hardly move so i can really crank them up. Do you think it is wrong cos i heard you should really set it at 80htz. i listen to techno 99% of the time and its most high range and really low range (i think) so i don't think it makes a difference.
Also because i am running the x-over so high and the speakers hardly move does it can they blow up without distorting. How can i tell if its distorting on the treble. |

Do you have any subs or what not? 160 would be ok, just means that your front speakers won't play anything lower than 160 in the frequency range I think..

I think if you play around with the speakers at different settings at the desired listening level, and 160HZ is the magic sweet spot for you, then stick with it. If the speakers don't like the high volumes, sound from the tweeters will give you an idea of how their all coping, but your woofers will tell you if their under stress by the way of clipping/distortion. Nothing wrong with letting the sub do all the work.

what will the tweeter do if it cant cope.
will it make the sound coming from them hard to follow or will i know that there is something wrong wehn i hear it. |

When I push my system too far, I notice that the tweeters get bright and harsh. Then I back it off a tad. Tells me that the system is lacking amp's and the HU is straining under pressure to drive my Alpines and Kenwoods. I do need an amp now I think.
That's how I know anyway. |

i've got both the crossovers on my HU and sub amp set to 50 hz, it sounds a lot better than at 80 or 125, and it doesnt draw the sound stage as far back

yeah but running low mean the speakers run harder and i cant push them as far.
I really cant tell the difference between the crossovers. i can hear a slight change but nothing drastic. The only thing i am picky about is burnt cds which dont sound the best cos they dont give the full range for some reason. i notice that the bass really doesn't come through on burnt cds. therefore i dont use them. ORiginals only for me. |

It depends on a number of things.
- What sort of speakers you have up front and what sub. A smaller sub can play up higfher and allow a higher crossover point such as the one your using. - What size front speakers, 51/4" or 4" 160 is great and probably what i would erccomened. with 6" or 6.5" i would try and run the crossover point lower to bring the soundstage forward and ensure you get acurate re-production in the midbass. - Crossover on the sub. obviously you have the entire frequency range broken up running through different speakers, so it's important to ensure you have every frequency re-produced. If you are rolloing off from your fronts at 160htz it's important to ensure you have the sub playing up high enough into those frequency's. - crossover slope will also effect this. 1st, 2nd, 3rd order etc... - A shallow slope from the frton stage may assist in intergration given that the frequency you are setting it at it a little higher, perhaps a 12db slope. I would suggest an 18 or 24db on the sub if its rolling off at 160. You may also find a fair amount of cabin gain in that region meaning that you can roll off the sub a little lower say 120htz on a 12db slope.

the crossovers are all set from the head unit so no frequencies are missed.
also up the front are 4" type s and the back have 6.5" type s. the sub is a 12" eclipse. |

With 4" 160htz is fine, 4's donty handle midbass all that well.

Mids are around the 100HZ to 200HZ area. My Alpines highs go up to around the 30KHZ 30,000 HZ. |

I've always thought of midrange as 100HZ and above. I suppose even 100HZ is pretty bassy, but speakers that don't go below that, and there are lots. I consider them to be too 'mid range'. |
