I am just going to ask one silly, quick question. What is forcing the barrel?
And sheez, i knew smart lock wasnt impossible to get around, but i never knew it was that easy!! thats a bit of a worry really! |

forcing the barrel is just that! useina tool ie screw driver to tunr the barrel with force hence forcing!

that transponder key is the one in gone in 60 seconds in the Mercs. Pwoah there in fords too, would never have known that.

you cant just force the barrel in the smartlock cars with a screwdriver...
there is a series of leds and reflective sensors inside the barrel...this is used to detect that a key is inside....

A flashing light on the dash is just as good as a $1000 alarm system as a deterrant, as a thief will not know the difference!!!!!
But once the deterrent has not deterred the thief (in most cases it does, you just never know as the thief has simply walked away without touching your car) the alarm will help a little, but if they can by pass the smart lock, they can also bypass the alarm!!! I personally refuse to have an alarm system for several reasons 1)had car catch on fire when alarm system shorted out 2)been left stranded by faulty alarm system kill switch 3)had car stolen with alarm system fitted Now i just have good insurance and some manual kill switches that i control!!! |

Not quite, it just detects if something has managed to turn the barrel, it can't tell if it's a key or something else. Smartlock itself is great as it's part of the car that can't be removed like an aftermarket alarm can, so unless you've got an hour to spend making it learn a new barrel, a smartlock bypass module, or a screwdriver and forearms of a 3 times a day wanker it'll keep your car where you left it (flatbed truck not withstanding). I've got smartlock, and added an aftermarket alarm, and have it bypassing smartlock for remote start

Well it got broken into & I had s**t stolen out of it.
How the f**k got into the car they used the plastic that bundles pamplets together,they pulled the left front passenger dorr handleoff & used a screwdriver the pricks & if I insure my car with the NRMA again I'll still have to pay a special excess for THEFT

i thought smartlock was good... dreams shattered! i knew you could pull the handle for the inside and open the doors but i thought the car was near impossible to take.what about those old school steering wheel locks? are they any good?

As was mentioned earlier in this old thread. No matter what you do to your car if someone wants your car they will get it especially pros. Obviously the more stuff on the car for security the better. Smartlock is still a good system to the average thief buts its now older technology. Smartshield in the Au's and BA's on are the newage anti theft devices now.

 ..5 year thread mine ftw.. its not the barrel that sends the signal, its the ignition switch... and yea smart lock isnt really that smart... back in 92 it was a pretty good set up.. but once people learnt how it worked its easy to get around.. even au smartsheild can be gotten around now days.. |

Best trick be to put a switch on the smartlock wire itself, as close to the ECU as you can manage (even inside the connector). Switch it off and the ECU will not run the car.
