It makes a huge difference. In the EL it made a massive differendce and i would sotrongly reccoomenened eveyone do it in their car regardless of weather there is spoeakers are there or not as it also assists in reducing road noise.


I thought i covered this in one of the tutorials. I have a number of pics.

Here is some to help you.
The first thing you need to do is use K & H wax and grease remover oto wipe odown all surfaces on the doors including removing all of the wax stuff..

Then you deaden the ooutter skin the inside of the inner skin and the ouotside of the inner skin. Use mdf to form a sealed enclosure and lastly use accoustically sound deadening foam directly behind any speakers to eliminate reflections.

I would say the difference was 100% with the sound deadening.

One day I'll finish making the other set of 8" door pods i have sitting here.

s**t pyroay, your a f**k' maniac :P

Essentially you made a speaker box out of the whole friggin door. Any damp problems with water hitting the acoustical material?

You know the silver studs that are pressed into the doors for the large screws to screw into, like through the armrests, one of mine has stripped and turns freely, I'm unable to screw one of the bigger screws back in. It doesn't look easy to fix, what do you think?

I've now done 1 door. Like pyroay's, but I have cuts and abrasions, gashes, nicks and stab wounds.
I have been proverbially filleted diced and sliced into little pieces, and I'm hurtin bad. I'm going to the shop now, and I'm gonna look like I either have a pet rabid mother f**k male lion, or I'm a self mutilator. Working with this car, I'd say I am definitely the latter. f**k... 8-)

No problem with water in doors. i have left the factory frain holes in the bottom of the dooros uncovered so drainage can still occur.

I really enjoyed odoing the deadening and i dont think i cut myself once, but you may have operated a little faster than i did. It took me 4hrs or more to do both doors...

Thanks pyroay, it took quite a while because I had 2 other issues to sort out while I was at it. I had to make a water proof curtain to go behind the speaker, I had water drip onto both doors magnets. I also had to make a rubber hoop to go around the speaker, as the rubber surround on the passenger side speaker was being squashed by the door trim. I thought I had fixed that issue in the past. So I made a hoop out of 10mm rubber hose cut in half. Now the driver has room to move :wink:
Oh, the reason I did all that is because I have a stock looking door trim that has an Alpine 171 with very big surrounds and magnets underneath. Much bigger than the stockies that came out of there....

Guys now that I have done the doors, I'm left with wind noise. It might be coming fron the front pillars not too sure. I understand the windows will let a bit in. Has anyone found this with their project?

I think Lexus put sound deadener mat, and then a layer of foam over the top on their pillars. Has anyone been able to cut down the wind noise by any similar method. I may even try the mat and then some space filler foam from a can over the top?

Right. I've pretty thoroughly deadened all the doors now, and am wondering what things I can do to the firewall to quieten the engine bay down. One hell of a lot of noise comes from there.

Any ideas on what I can do to the engine side of the firewall?

I was just thinking, wouldn't it be good if you could rig your trip computer to display amp temp, output and capacitor voltage.
I say this because there is a provision for some aftermarket headdeck's to display all of this info in their screens.

If you want to do further sound deadening outside of the cabin, try using bitumen from supercheap. IF you clean the underbody and spray or paint this stuff on you will get a quiter cabin. As for the firewall, get some thick (1' if it fits) sound deadening matt with the aluminium backing, suited to high temps. Also you can drill a small hole (behind the plastic shroud) in your A pillar and fill your A pillar with expanding foam. Dont fully fill it because the foam expands quite a bit.

Yeah I've done all that too. With the A pillars I've taken them off, applied 2 layers of Flashtac and 1 layer of foam impregnated with tar.
I've also painted the wheel arches.

I have to work on the firewall now.
