Well, months after being inspired by Kit, I read the CAA tutorial on Sound Deadening last week, and I'm kicking my a*** into gear.
I went and got some Flashtac today, which is pretty thin, but it should do the job I'm hoping. Also got some MDF, I'm gonna seal up the doors good and proper. Also attacking my parcel shelf and boot lid with the stuff, hopefully elimating some annoying sub rattles. I'll take a few pics, just for s**t and giggles. And if there's any interest I could put together a slap 'n' dash Doco, although you can just go over to CAA and read their very good one.

Did the drivers door today.
Had to do a mad dash back to bunnings for more Flashtac though. I used 10m of 96mm wide flashtac For one door! Started pooring with rain but, and I was only in the carport, so the wind was blowing it in (I got wet). So I'll do the rest bit by bit during the week. Already I can hear a major difference. The increased midbass from the drivers door has f**k up my tuning. I wasn't expecting such a large difference! Pain in the a*** to do, but highly recommended. By the way, there is a very good tutorial for this on caraudioaustralia.com It's not something that you have to folllow a manual for however. A quick browse of the tutorial, then you can just wing it yourself

I also noticed quite a difference. Keeps road noise out. Improves the sound of the front door speakers.
I have all 4 doors done. The inner layers, and the outer layer the door trim sits against. I also did behind the plastic surrounds around the small windows on the rear doors, and I lined the A frames behind the shrouds. It gets to a point where all thats left in the way of noise, is whatever comes through the firewall as usual, and wind noise. Wind noise sounds like it increases, but thats just the fact you can hear more, and it's not drowned out by any other sounds. You get use to that change. Just an update. I must have done mine a couple of months ago now. The 1st door up to 3 months ago. Well I've had all 4 trims off in the last 2 weeks, and none of the flashtac is coming off so far. And I hope it stays that way. |

Hell yes. I'm doing the left door bit by bit during the week. I won't be going as far as you did Kit, I don't have that much patience. I just about slit my wrists trying to clean the inner doorskin. I just want to eliminate some rattles that my stereo has brought out into the open, so doors and parcel shelf are on my hitlist.

Sound deadending is fantastic...those who do not do it are not doing their speakers justice ! I've only got 5.25" 2 way splits in at the moment, but they play very nicely - terrific midrange and yes more accurate midbass - not 'muddy' or 'half a***'.
The CAA tutorial is terrific - I taped up the actuating metal rods with electrical tape, fiilled up the holes with bits of leftover deadener and then used Stinger Expert Roadkill to do the inner part of the door (where the side anti-protrusion bars are). The kit I have says for 4 doors...but it is really only good for 2 if you want a good job IMHO. Parcel shelf sound deadening - before and after : |

Nice job Steve!
That's what I'm tackling next. Finished the passenger door today. I'm stoked with the difference, and even the reduction in road noise is noticable (if I ever turn my stereo down ).

I never got around to doing a tutorial, but
8" Dynaudio Driver in Lisa's car.... My car has some more serious sound deadening but that required the interior to be completly stripped and a combination of materials to be used.

No. I covered everything with fish oil befoer putting back together. and if the sounddeadening is done properly then moisture should not be able to get behind it. Surface was throughly preparde with wax and greese remover first.
Foam is stuuck on over the sound deadener otherwise it might trap moisture behind it.....

Where does everyone get their sound-deadening from? I can only find it in small rolls (Brown Bread). I did my front doors half-a*** but it made a massive difference SQ wise.

I just used 'Flashtac', a weather proofing foil backed bitumen strip that you can get at bunnings, cheap.
