hey guys wasn't sure where to post this.
i got som thick speaker wire with my wiring kit and have no use for it. anyway i am putting a neon in the boot and my way of hooking it up is by running this speaker wire with a ten amp fuse just the same way as we hook up an amp. then what i want to do is run the neon ground cable to the boot grounding switch which i think of it as sort a remote or trigger wire thing. anyway do you reckon the spaker wire would be able tohave 10amp in it. Cheers |

How thick is it? Would the diameter of the copper (not including insulation) be 1mm or more? If so then it would be fine for 12v applications, after all copper is copper.....
There will be some who no doubt will dissagree with me as I have been told by sales people the welding cable (which I use to supply my amps) is resistive..... Go figure...

should be fine, neons draw f**k all power, but dont expect miracles if ya want to run other s**t off the same wire

it would be fine to power neons as Interceptor said, but I'd run a smaller fuse. Then you have all bases covered, if there is a fault the fuse will blow before the wiring gets hot.

generally only go slightly higher than the current draw of whatever the wire is powering

the neon doesn't say anything about what it draws so i think i am going to just put a 10 amp fuse an see how i go. oh hang on, what about i just put the same size fuse that is on the neon cable. the neons fuse is 1A250V. from what i understand it should be 1 amp 250vols. so i think i will just put a 5 amp fuse.

Thats way too high considering the neon fuse is 1A. Maybe 5% tolerance on top is the way to go.

See what fuses you can get hold of if you can get less than 5A then go for it otherwise 5A should be ok...

The one amp fuse is to protect the neon. The fuse you are installing is to protect the wiring. 5 amp would do but if it were me I'd go with a 2 amp. You will be able to get them at an elecrtonics store like d**k Smith's.

i've used it for all my neons, 2 years running and still no problems, i actually burned out the wire they gave me with one of the neons, ended up swapping it for speaker wire which is still goin strong so, should b fine
