I just put some kicker splits in the front of my car and was wondering what to do about the rear. I see a lot of cars with awesome stereos and they still run coaxial speakers in the rear. I was going to run splits in the back but seeing this in a few cars now i was starting to think against it. Is it a sound qaulity isse or do people just think it's a waste to spend more money to have splits in the rear when they rarely have passengers?

Waste of money IMO. Plus you really dont want much of a rear stage anyway - most comp setups have the rear faded out a bit anyway.
Its normally a good idea to get matching speakers front and rear tho, ie the coaxial version of the split in the front, for tonality reasons, or so they say. |

I'm running splits in the rear, tried coaxials and splits and found that the splits had a much better sound quality.

splits will always sounds better, cause they are generally a better speaker... if ur running a sub then its total waste of money casue the subs will just over power them anyways... but if u have no intentions of running a sub.. then it may be an idea ...

I ahven't ran beack spekers for ages, whats the point,
Do you sit in the back to listen to your stereo? Like already said, its better for sound staging anyway to have front splits tuned and facing correctly, with a good range subwoofer.

Just because you have subs, doesn't mean they will overpower a decent set of splits. It sounds like you just want to hear the sound of the bass... I've got splits front and rear, and 2 x 12's and the subs don't overpower them, because they're amped as well, and if you like the sound of the tunes you're listening to, its not all just about bass.
There's still a point to have rear speakers, its balances out the sound you have. Still sounds better to have it setup properly, than just run fronts only. |

As already said, waste of time spending big $$ on rears. I have mine faded to the front for better stereo imaging. If anything in the rear just some coaxials. The only reason i have splits in the rear is that they were very cheap at the time.

Depends what your aiming for... a SQ or SPL setup.. Either way splits would be over kill in either situation. Your fronts should be doing most of the SQ work so your best bet is to use coaxial rear speakers just to fill out the space as EL XR8 said it gives a bit of balance but there is no doubt that if you're running a sub the rears will be droned out a bit.
In my previous car i had 2x12" subs in the boot and 6x9"s in the parcel shelf and the 6x9"s were really struggling and distorting.. A 6" speaker would be easier to hear because it will handle mid-high frequencies much better and stand out from the sub... Oh also, a coaxial speaker tends to have higher wattage/rms, which is more ideal for the rear or in a parcel shelf. Anyways, rule of thumb is whatever you do, don't use 6x9"s with a sub. Period! There are some great tutorials on speaker selection etc. at the beggining of this audio, visual and communications forum. Hope this helped. |

Most competition sound quality setups don't have rears at all. It drags the sound stage back = loss of points = bad.

No rears at all unless you want to please your rear seat passengers
My fronts are good enough not to need rears, they fill the whole car with more than enough sound to keep up with two 12" subs. |

Fronts supply most of the sound in quality setup's the rears as mentioned are just to fill in the excess space and give it a more dimensional sound, especially if running subs.
Another way of looking at it - How many bands / concerts have you been to see that have massive sound at the rear? none! All the power is at the front with only a fraction at the back

Splits are great for staging.
Useless in the rear..... 3 way 6.5's will be best. |

I have 3 ways in the rear...fills a bit in the rear. I find it awkward listening to just fronts, but speakers are faded to the front.
Aren't subs meant to be omnidirectional and be used at certain frequencies so that you don't hear it from the rear? Either way, splits in the back are a bit overkill unless you score a bargain. phong =P~

Ok i think i will find a decent pair of coaxials for the rear then. Some people even say it sounds a little funny with splits both front and rear anyway. Thanks for all the opinions guys

So if your sub is working under that threshold, you wont be able to tell its in the back, it'll just be everywhere around you |
