I'm looking at upgrading my 7-year-old 8" Kicker enclosed sub.
Problem I'm having is that the sub amp only has 2 choices with a 2 switch crossover. 70Hz or 110Hz. It seems I don't have enough control over the LP filtering. When set to 70hz there is too much boxiness or boominess at higher bass frequencies which can sort of rattle your ears a bit. I want try and improve the sound in the back seat as you guys know. The parcel shelf speakers are only playing highs now. Anyone have a suggestion for a reasonable quality sub for the back. And I only seriously want it for low the lowest notes, I want my front splits to handle most of the bass, mids and highs? |

Well.
what size sub are you after? another 8"? If you want low, got for a 15". You want your splits to be playin above about 65hz, and your sub below that. Any lower for the splits and they start to sound like a***. Also what amp do you have now? It might be worth upgrading that as it may not be powerful enough to do a new sub justice. |

I'm looking for around the 10" mark.
I want it only for SQ not pure blunt trauma. The Alpines in the front do a pretty good job bass wise. But I'll probably end up putting some Focals in there and moving the Apline 171's to the parcel shelf at some stage. But I must admit, sitting in the backseat, the Alpines are really sweet for bass man, not bad at all, especially as I have heavily sound deadened all the inteior doors. Jees it makes a difference though. Best thing I ever did. |

its actually true tho - play low bass thru speakers at a decent volume and theyll either sound like a***, which is severly distorted (eg f@rt noises... well sortof) , or they crackle and burn. we all know a*** dont sound good. A 10" sub aye..... well I had a Alpine type S a while back, then got another one. then sold both for a 15" Clarion. I think the Clarion would be classed as pure blunt trauma... it can hurt you.... I think the Alpines sounded very good, they were quite musical, sounded like I could use them for midbass/range if I wanted to. I got another one coz one wasnt loud enough, though I wasnt feeding them enough power, bout half their RMS. 
A Type R should sound very nice if the S was anything to go by, but I think the Focal would trump that, as would a Trio or Hertz sub, which are bothe renowned for their SQ. whatever you do, give them at least their RMS value, if not more, have a good solid sealed box made to size, and dont buy the low end models (of any brand). |

Thanks for that. I'm sort of leaning toward Focal.
Does it really make a difference does it, competition and SQ. Once in the boot you wouldn't think it'd make much of a difference to sound quality would you? |

I want it only for SQ not pure blunt trauma. I would go for a 12" over a 10" sub in the boot of a Falcon .... the larger cone area of a 12 would tend to give you deeper more authorative bass. As for a good SQ sub .... I would also have a look at the Boston G2 .... this is a very nice sounding musical sub. Given the right enclosure (solid) the G2 is punchy, tight, well controlled and delivers deep powerfull bass. You havent said what sub amp you are using now .... but as mentioned by others you may need to upgrade the amp to do a good sub justice

Hey Sierra those G2's look pretty cool.

Hey Kit .... the G2 is a very good SQ sub .... and well worth being on your short list.
That video is actually of two G5's .... the G2's bigger brother .... those things can sure move some air
I currently run a single 12" G5 in my system .... but I had trialed a G2 for a couple of weeks before getting the G5 and I was very impressed by the G2's performance.

No, they won't sound as good. Though we're talking details here. The whole rear seat area will muffle the output -taking the punch/edge off. Also, you have a bad time-alignment problem as the sub would be so much further away from you.

The results that you get from having a sub in the boot will depend on the install and the quality of the components used. A well set up SQ system will not let you "hear" the sub (irrespective of where it's located) .... rather the sub bass will integrate seamlessly with the mid bass and appear to part of the sound stage up front. It is possible get good SQ with a sub in the boot

Thats what I'm after. Nice integration of bass so you can't tell where it's coming from.
I hate that boxy muddy bass that hangs around the back of your ears in the rear seat. And consquently, it tells you exactly where it's coming from. I'll checkout the Boston G2 or G5. All I need to do is find out where they sell them in Perth. Pre-enclosed in a quality enclosure. I'll check out Boston's 6.5 splits too. I want 1 or 2 pairs of good sq quality 2 way splits that can reproduce nice bass. Ideally I would like the fronts to do most of the work bass wise. Hard to do I know. So I need advice on 2 levels: - Who has heard a pair of sq 6.5's that reproduce a nice amount of bass - Where in Perth do I go for Boston Acoustics lol not asking much am I

Actually I still need the tips for the questions above, but I don't know how easy it will be to find Boston speakers in perth. So I might check out DLS as well. They seem, from some review I've read, to make some kick a** high end 6.5 speakers that reproduce very good bass.
