Depends on the unit. Some units (such as my housemates Pioneer) allow you to change the polarity of the handbrake line.

Maybe it is ment to be earthed. I can't remmeber, what ever it's ment to be is how i've done it - 12 months later I can't remember which it is.

You can use a multimeter to work out whether it needs to be put on -ve or +ve.
