Hi all
I am trying, without much sucess to mount some 6.5" splits. i made up a bit of a spacer sweet as however the spacer is too thich to allow me to put the dorr trims on and the speaker is too close to the so if the grill was on it would punch a hole into the speaker. What are my options? (see picture)

Is the spacer to change the mounting size or to gain rear clearance? If its the former then can you mount it from the rear.

Im running 2x Alpine Type-R splits in my front doors mate one in the factory location like yours...yes the fancy lookin supports to hold the cone are just to big for the factory hole....u can either resize the whole hole but all I did was just use some good tin snips/metal cutters and cut out just a tiny bit extra for the support arms to slot into....the type-R's just clear the window too so dont worry about that
Did u take the grill out or cut it out? Cause that may have been a mistake  but yeh ccidents happen if ya did.
Need any help gimme a yell.

I just took off the grill, so you reckon just move it a little bit up and right. and cut a bit off the door so it sits in the center of the speaker grill. Is the 12mm mdf to thick, should i run it through a thicknesser to about 10mm or should i scrap the spacers all together. Oh and where abouts is the easiest spot to mount the tweeters?

Well theres no need for the spacer thats up to u...u could run it thru a thicknesser but id be going lower than 10mm maybe 8 or 6...if u cut out tiny bits like the pic below it should sit neatly centred like the original speaker did. As far as tweeter positioning...many will argue where is the best place to mount....in the end as close to be angled at your ears and closest to your ears.....BUT still equal or close to equal with the rest of the front stage....other wise high frequencies will be reaching you ears far to early etc etc messing up your staging but yeh.... Easiest place is the factory location.....also the most cost effective...other than that your choices are custom fabrication of tweeter pods...mounted on the doors....the a-pillar....corner of the dash where it was originally but higher and angled into the cabin rather than the sound waves initially aimed at deflecting off the glass.

u could try baffle plates. They are just 8-12mm MDF rings that u can use.

too thick....the type-rs then rub or hit the door trim cover...altho he wont really have that prob now  ..ut yeh u dont want that...just cut holes like the pic below and it will slot in fine...sorry i was supposed to post it up last night.

thats sorta what i did to fit the focals, they slotted straight in after that
who needs spacers when u got a grinder

I have the Alpine 171 6.5" in the factory location and had the same issues.
When I installed them I coated the door trim grille and the area with Silicon spray and then pressed the trim back in place on the door. Took it off and what ya know, Silicon spray transfered directly onto the speaker surrounds. What I did then was snip off a couple (NOT ALL) the offending plastic studs holding the grilles on. Then got a length of new garden hose and cut that in half <-be careful. I then taped this half cut hose around the outside of the speaker baskets, reattached the door trims over this. Now the hose holds the trim off the speaker surrounds, and the drivers have plenty of room to, to do their arr thing. |

who needs spacers when u got a grinder thats all ya need grinder, cutter just even a pair of good cutteers...the type r support arms arent that much bigger than the standard hole...

Thanks Cutters and a file did the job plus some 4mm spacers.
Next step, need to know how to wire the xovers to the woofer, tweeter, and HU Also thinking about mounting the tweeter between the front and back door above the seatbelt or in the speaker grill which do you reckon's better |
