Pyroay,I have a pair of tweeters, that I would like to use in my "A" pillars. In the wiring is something sealed in a vacuum wrap. Is this the crossover, if so, do I connect it in line with the door speakers, to the amplifier?

what does it look like?
is it a black box with several screw joins to put wire in? like that? if so. there are 3 connection, an input from the amplifier. and output for ur door speaker and an output for your tweeter.

I know what you are talking about. The pioneer 4"splits in my car have them. They go in the line to the tweeters. I think they are like cheap crossovers. The ones gaz has got there are the same as the ones in my ute. Haven't really noticed any difference except those ones are bigger and hardere to hide

Is there a difference in performance between the two, Big Kev?

Guys, thanks for that. They are pioneer,so the crossover must be a cheap version. I will buy a better set next time I am at the stereo store.

Yeh there is a difference.... A passive crossover is cheap and normally simple to install - as they run in line with the speaker wire feeds on the same line. Normally, they are designed to modify a particular frequency. But they offer less flexibility and don't allow the fine-tuning control you will get with active crossovers. Active crossovers require additional wiring for power and earth, but give you far greater control. Active crossovers help your amplifier by cutting unwanted frequencies before the amp has to boost them. This way your amplifier can focus only on the frequencies that you want to hear, without wasting power on frequencies you don't want to hear... Active crossovers are normally built into amplifiers....this is where you get the LPF/HPF, set frequency settings/ranges etc...its nortmally a good idea tho to have an external active crossover...simply for ease of tuning and also if u ever get a new amp that doesnt have this functionality u wont loose that cross over tuning ability. Theres alot more to the technical backgorund of the two but you can get the drift

Being pioneer doesnt necessarily mean cheap mate...pioneer sell subs over 2.5K still so cant be too crap Could u describe what was in the vacuum wrap? was it a box? or capacitor ?

Its two pieces under vacuum wrap. The amp has HPF-LPF settings for both channels,so all may well be ok.

ok....what i meant by explaining the ampflifier cross over has nothing to do with the tweeters or the oringinal post you had sorry....but yeh if u can see what it is....u said 2 peices under vacuum wrap but lol that aint any help ....pic would be good otherwise try explaining what in the wrap in more detail...

The little black cylinder think in heat shrink is a bi-polar capacitor, it cuts the low and mid frequencies out to the tweeter. Almost all 2-3 way speaker set ups use a passive x-over (frequencies split after the amp) be it a capacitor only in your case or a series of chokes, capacitors and wire wound resisitors. Active x-overs split the frequencies before the amp but not really feasable for just doing tweeters.

Thats right they way passive crossovers work by cutting the frequencies after theyve been boosted is aa waste of power BUT obviously they are easier for non-car audio technically minded ppl if thats the right way to say it to install and enjoy plus their nice n cheap

Basically a decent 2 way x-over cuts the lows and mids to the tweeter and the highs to the mid/bass, it may also have an atenuator for the tweeter to adjust the high level. Your current set up only cuts the lows and mids to the tweeter but allows all frequencies to the mid/bass.

Thanks Joolz, any recommendations for splits with 4 inch speakers for the door?
