Hey guys.
I was thinking of putting another battery in the boot of my car. I bought this 70AMP isolator off of eBay for about $50:

I wanted to mount it in the engine bay... But I really don't know where to mount it :? Anyone ever done this before or anyone got any ideas??? Pyroay? Someone?!

If I can't mount it then I guess I'll just bridge the two batteries without the isolator.

Any help would be great.

It doesn't matter too much where you mount it provided it is setup correctly.. so if you have room in your engine bay go for it.. if not hide it near your new auxilary battery..

The only reason I wanted to mount it in my engine bay is because it requires a positive feed from each battery as well as from the alternator. That means I would have to run two extra thick wires from my engine bay to my boot where the aux. battery is... TOO HARD.
Oh well, I guess I'll just do it the cheats way.

AHHH.. one of those types.. just looked at the pic.. we sell the same thing at work.. It is just a few big a$$ diodes not a controller.. keep in mind that you will have a voltage drop over this 'controller'.. Good luck with it..

Yeh thanks man... I know all the pro's and con's of it. We've got one fitted in our F100 Mobile Home. But the more I think aobut it the more I reckon I'll just give it a miss and just bridge the two batteries directly.

I decided to just bridge the two batteries. It works heaps better. That way I can run all my positive lines straight from the auxilary battery in the boot rather than all the way from the front.

i think that pic is just misleading Kev, The wire goes underneath the opposite Terminal... lol i spotted the dead short in about 1 second!

Yeh what I was hoping hehe but thought Id ask anyways - I still would have gone with an isolater/cutover relay

It depends why your getting another battery?

If it is to run a monster stereo system then you want it mounted as close to the amps as possible, that would mean in the boot, in which case use your isolator and run thick cable (0gauge) to the boot and connect it from the alternator if it is a different size to your other battery or to the other battery if it is the same size. You will still eed an inline sfuse up the front before you go through the firewall.

If you just want increased cranking pwoer or battery life (ie radio on while car not running) then you can mkount them together int he engine bay. You do not need to run both to each other and the alternator. Just upgrade your alternator wire to 0g (50mm2) and then connect both batteries together. This should only be done if both batteries are the same size and type.

If you connect the batteries together (like one BIG battery) then this won't stop you getting a flat battery. What's your purpose?

The idea of having 2 batteries is if you run your stereo for a few hours and drain the battery, there is still another one to start your engine. Then when the engine is started it charges the flat battery back up.

This is why you need to use the isolator - it connects the 2 batteries together to the alternator ONLY when the car's running. Other times the stereo battery is disconnected from the other.
