for a while now ive been wanting to install a 40 chan UHF in my car, the only things to stop me were the insane prices these things cost you (for basically 150 year old tech!!!!) and the fact that i read somewhere that they were upgrading the old 40chan system to a new 80 chan system (i think could be only 60) so i decided to hold off buying a UHF untill the upgrade happend, i found that info out at the start of last year but i havnt been able to find it or any other spit of info on it, does anyone know when this new system (+ radios) comes up an running?

The new UHF system is apparantly just going to be a channel split system. Basically the new channels will just slot in between the current ones.
The idea is to give more bandwidth so you can actually use a radio and not listen to all the wankers on it.
When its going to happen but who knows.
As for any new tech the 60-80 channel radios will be massively expensive when they come out and will drop in a few years time after that.
Why not just get a budget , entry label UHF in the mean time.
Me and the Mrs both have GME 3200 radios in both of our 4x4's and they are great.
Google Prestige Communications in WA. They are mail order but dirt cheap and reliable. I have bought off them before and have no problems recommending them at all.

More people paid for a ride in a VT commodore then an AU Falcon so the VT is superior.
Based on that fact my Mum is the best around!
