Im not too sure about hooking up a portable hard drive....
There are some on the market (particularly the larger type ones) require for you to utilise two usb ports at once to hook into the hard disk. So its like you are using two usb ports at the same time. The reason being is because the usb ports run only on a very small amount of power, and sometimes this low power output is not enough for the hard drive to function though u can usually get usb keys now like round the 2gb range pretty cheap. If you decide to get a hard disk, check to see how many usb ports it would require to be able to function properly. Dazz |

Dazz USB eys are the easiest option in that concern cheap as and will hold more than enough music.....hard drives can be power hungry hence why its normally better to run from a 12V power source externally and not backed off the head unit powering via the USB interface/interfaces.

I was reading the specs on a USB capable head unit recently, and was amazed to read it only supports 254 files on the USB device. Now that's very poor.
ie. check the detailed specs of the HU you want to get first. It may be a near useless feature. If it does work well (accesses lots of files), then think about a 2.5" HDD (laptop style) in an external case, they can quite happly run from a USB port. But are limited to about the 120GB size mark. 3.5" HDDs are the power hungry ones, but come in much bigger sizes.

yeah i have used external hard drives with my usb deck, but as datamine said, rarely can it access all the files.
i think you might also find that it is 254 files per folder, so if your music was arranged in folders, i.e by artist or album, you should be fine, but dont quote me on that.

I got a dammm iPod. You won't regret it. Just make sure you have good speakers in your car and headphones for elsewhere.

Hello Everyone
O.k. I have done a bit of testing with this and here is what I found The usb ports on decks do not have the power to run a laptop drive, it tries to spin up and dosn't I tried my W800I too since it works like a USB key and the decks could not use it A normal computer "thumb drive" works just fine I ended up getting an axis head unit, has usb, 3.5mm input as well as mp3 cd all for $230 |
