USB port on mine doesn't like the Sony MP3 player we've got, it only plays tracks stored on a thumbdrive. Headunit treats this the same as an MP3 DVD, ie. files and folders.
Think it depends on the headunit though.

My dad wants a new head unit with a usb port on it. From what i undersatnd any deck that has a usb port allows control of the songs on the usb, mp3 player etc. from the deck itself. Correct??
We looked at a JVC, Pioneer and Clarion and i personally don't like JVC so i was trying to steer him towards Alpine but i have only found one model with a USB being $700 so it's too pricey for him. Does anyone know if any of Alpines new models have ports on them?? |

I'm not sure about the usb, but i believe most of the alpine decks come with an ipod cable that you can connect and cotrol an ipod/mp3 player through.

Yeah im aware of that but the cable plugs into an ipod. An mp3 player etc needs a cable with a headphone jack. Also from what im told the deck won't recognise it properly and you will have to change songs, folders etc from the mp3 player itself instead of the deck.

Think it depends on the headunit though. Well thats not i want to hear because he just got a Sony Mp3 player and we had a feeling it might not be recognised because Sonys run atrac and different formats. What model and brand do you have. |

H/U is a generic I picked up from ebay, supposedly running Pioneer internals though has a facia similar to JVC.
MP3 player is the 20gig Sony Walkman. Had a play around with file formats and such last night. Found that using the player as a portable hard drive (ie drag n drop MP3s onto it) rather than converting the files to atrac format will allow them to work on the H/U. Downside is that you can't listen to those files without the H/U or a PC.

I had a feeling that changed all the formats was going to be the only way to do it. Thanks for that. Can you change songs, folders from the deck itself??

have a look at Repco stores at the new VDO (Siemens) range - some spiffy looking units, good prices, and the higher end ones have USB, aswell as memory card readers built into the front of them!

Yep, only to do it as the software on the player won't recognise the files. Just the same as usplaying an MP3 disc.

I had to replace my JVC head unit that I had for about 4 to 5 yrs of faithful service, so I went to JB hifi in Preston, and I found the staff there very helpful, after looking at various brands and models I chose midrange in the JVC DVD series, when they went to install, the wiring didnt match up so I paid an extra $20, about $370 all up on the cost and got top of the range JVC, after about a week bored an nothin to do I decided to read up on their features an WOW!!.. to my surprise, a USB port, so, off I went back to JVC brought myself a 4Gig Memory stick, went back home plugged it in the comp, and downloaded a heap of Mp3's into it, soooo... no cds anymore.. just turfed em all out.. havent looked back.. personally, with the first JVC head unit I had I got a good run out of it, and hopefully the same with this...

With the new range of Pioneer decks you can purchase a USB lead to connect via the Pioneer P-Bus connection. You can plug your MP3 player straight into it then. The higher end models come with the cable to.

Well... with USB ports up front of the head unit on the JVC, and all you need is a lil ol mem stick, why would you want to be carrying an mp3 player to plug into a cable from the back of some of these other units, no messy cables or nothin... just a mem stick...

Think I'll stick with the MP3 DVD I've been using. 4.7gig and no dangly bits hanging out of the player. had the same disc in for a couple of months and still haven't listened to everything on it.
