So i noticed there is a hole in the parcel shelf of my AU. I'm assuming it's for a 10" sub that has something to do with Ghia's premium sound?
My question is, would it be worth selling my old boxed JL Audio 12" for a 10" to chuck in the parcel shelf? What's the sound quality difference in a 12" box in the boot and a decent 10" in the parcel shelf?

It's more along the lines of a 6x9 style sub, they also had a grill which covered it which may be worth chasing down from a wreckers.
Whether your better or not with it, I suspect not, but it would be cleaner, but I don't know a whole lot about it.

its actually a 8inch sub
and you can fit a 10inch with a spacer, but other than that, theres no real point in using the whole for a sub if your after big bass! |

i love how quick you get replies on these forums!
So you guys reckon keep the 12" boxed sub over a new 10" (with spacer) in the hole? Maybe I'll go both Judging by my uneducated theory, you'd get sharp bass from the sub in the cabin and deep solid bass from the boot. What do you guys think?

personally id go for the 12 inch i bigger base, and also the 10inch in the parcel is an eyesore!

Do you guys have a boxed sub? If so, what do you do with it in your boot? Like i said, I've got a 12" in a carpeted box, but it doesn't fit beneath the parcel shelf, right behind the seats (too tall), so in the old car, I just left it in the middle of the boot.
I think it looks out of place, being such a big box, and it takes up space. Would you guys recommend maybe buying a smaller boxed sub, or building a custom box/enclosure or just leaving as is?

When i had the factory sub there in my EL, it rattled heaps and I hated it! Replaced it with a boxed 10' and its tons better

Personally I like a pair of 10's rather than a single 12 but I would use a purpose built enclosure instead of a generic one....

The 8" hole in the parcel shelf, requires a sub that's fine playing 'free air' (technically 'infinite baffle'). Most subs expect to be playing in a box of some sort (sealed or ported).
The stock Ford sub, is crappy to the max, and is distorted and lacks punch at any sort of decent volume. Best bet is a after market job in a proper box.

in my au i bought an 8 inch sub from super cheap (cost about 20$ to 30$) and dropped it in the hole, left it covered by the carpet so you never knew it was there. wired it from the rear speakers with positive from one speaker and negative from the other. also had a 12 inch sub in a box in the boot with an amp, got nice deep bass when required, and also found it to have more punch in normal music. pretty sure i still have it hear somewhere cluttering up the shed with the 6 x 9's i had in there, can drag it out for more details if your interested in more details.

Was this while still using the rear speakers? Was it running off the headunit?

yea this is while it was all running normally. just latched on to the rear positive speaker wire on one side (drivers side), and latched onto the rear negative speaker wire on the other side (passengers side). ran the lot from the head unit for a while, then bought a 4 channel amp which powered left front, left rear, right front, right rear, and via the crossover wiring also powered the parcel shelf sub. after that i bought a 12 inch sony sub in a box and a sony 250watt amp to power the 12 inch sub and added that to the boot. sounded pretty good to me....

What do you guys think, should I chuck in my old Pioneer fronts and tweeters (TS-1625), or keep the stock ones. I think I'll keep the stock rear 6x9's instead of putting my cheap TS-A1682S in.
