ok i currenty have 2 pioneer 1200W subs running off a calrion 4 channel 240W amp and i cant turn it up loud enough because it turns off because it overheats. anyway, what amp should i be running these subs off of. Some have told me to get a mono block and others a better 4 channel. How many Watt amp do i need aswel? and how much ruffly am i looking at spending?

The amp is way too small for 2 subwoofers. I would suggest not to run the amp for too long with that kind of small power output for such high powered requirement subs. Soon enough the amp will just die.
Get a monoblock and run the 2 subs in parallel if they are single voice coils running at 4 Ohms. Get a monoblock which can put out maybe 600W RMS @ 2 Ohm...should be sufficient enough. Monoblocks can range from hundreds to thousands of dollers, depending on what you really want. I would say a minimum of $400 to $500 to get a decent amplifier with enough power. Though you can find some bargains sometimes 4 Channel amps aren't really designed to run subwoofers which require heaps of power. I personally wouldn't get a 4 channel amp for 2 power subs. Hope that helps. phong =P~

You have lots of bigger problems - the amp is overheating because its clipping - its generating DC and putting it into your subs.
There was an excellent article in Silicon chip a few years back saying that most people dont realise that you are much much better off with more Amp, and less speaker. A speaker that has too much *clean* power put into it may survive, but putting DC into a speaker voice coil (what happens when your amp isnt up to the job) will actually melt the voice coil, turning them into Scrap. Get a decent amp before the Subs... and you'll be sweet Nigel |

As Nigel has said you're clipping out your amp simply because its not designed to cope with running those power hungry subs...espescially when you're obviously trying to crank it up as we all love to do.
Depending what RMS value and coil setup your subs(their impedances) have will determine what sort of amp/wiring configuration is gonna best suit your needs...if youre not running your current setup hard anymore things will be okay however it wont last forever as underpowering your subs will eventually inflict damage from etc wear and tear.....keep cranking it and you'll be sure to kill your amp and even cook the woofers... Save some cash....for me spending money on amps is like buying a head unit....you dont have to spend as big like you would a decent head unit but the aim is to get the best you can for your money to build a strong backbone to your system...will save you money in the long run if you ever go to upgrade to bigger better speakers/subs etc as your amps will cope. What sort of subs are these...as in what nominal power rating do they have - xxxW RMS....the 1200w peak value isnt the best to guage off..are they SVC/DVC/QVC (Single/Dual/Quad Voice Coils) and what impedance are the coils rated at - normally 2 or 4 ohms...? Also what sort of power are you running in the car, cable size to your current amp, fuses etc just for curiosity sakes....

i have a very similar question - i have a soundstorm (no not soundstream) 1500W mono amp which I used to run my 12" 1000W xplod sub which it did no worries.
I have now got a new sub, a 15" Kicker CVR and I was wondering if I can use the same amp for it. I don't wanna root the sub because its pretty exxy. It is dual voice coil, i'm unsure of the ohms. any help would be great.

Halo best bet is to look at the specs of your sub and amp as the above mentioned I believe are peak watt values....what w RMS figure do they have down for the sub and amp....
Also the ohms value for both sub and amp are important when determining the capability of your amp....I wouldnt like to suggestah yes wire the sub up with the colis in this configuration to get the max from your subs at a 1ohm load when your amp isnt capable...this would lead to a dead over driven amp and possibly damage the coils in your woofer... If you like pm me those stats or provide the model number for your amp and sub n i'll do a quick google and look it up for you.

for anyone else who could help, Sub: Kicker 15" CVR DVC Comp sub. impedance(Ohms) 2Ωdvc max rec amp power 1000 sensitivity (dB 1w/ 1m) 89.1 frequency response (Hz) 25-500 Amp: Soundstorm f1500D mono amp, 1500 watts * RMS Power Range : 540-800 Watts * Number Of Channels: 1 * Maximum Power: 1500 Watts * Low Frequency response: 9 Hz * High Frequency Response: 50000 Hz * Built In Crossovers: Yes * Channel Separation: Yes # Max Power 2 Ohm: 1500 Watts x 1 # RMS Power 4 Ohm: 540 Watts x 1 # RMS Power 2 Ohm: 800 Watts x 1 # Signal to Noise Ratio: 102dB # Low Pass Crossover (Variable): 40Hz - 150Hz # High Pass Crossover (Variable): 200Hz # Bass Boost (Variable): 0 - +18dB # Frequency Response (+/-3dB): 9Hz - 50kHz # THD @ RMS Output: 0.01% # Channel Separation : 90dB # Damping Factor: 125+ # TriMode Operation i am wondering if i can use this amp to run the sub without damaging the sub - i am unsure about the ohms figures and the fact it has dual voice coils if it will be compatible? Sub its kinda exxy and don't want it destroyed.. thanks in advance.

sub says "max rec amp power" of 1000 and runs at 2 ohms, amp puts out 1500 at 2 ohms (or 800 rms at 2 ohms), so should be sweet.
just a matter of plug and play?

Hey James,
Shot you this in a pm also but having a look round it seems that sub is rated at round 400-500w RMS for the 2ohm DVC model The best wiriing configuration with your current amp (and yes the current amp is fine for the job) would be to run the coils wired in a series configuration to utilise the amps 4ohm load of 540w RMS... Having a single sub with dual voice coils rated at 2ohms you can only run off an amp at either a 4ohm load or 1ohm load. Alot of amps although they state they are capable of running at 1ohm shouldnt be run at that level. The lower the ohms / impedence the more power can be supplied from the amp due to the resistance being lower however this generates more heat(heat being the enemy for amps) and also reduces the control your amp has over the woofer/speaker...this leads to increased possibly of induced noise and interference and reduction in sound quality. a 4ohm load your amp should happily run without drama forever and will provide more than enough power for your sub whilst maintaining the quality. If you are not familiar with wiring a sub in series...by this I mean the positive from the amp channel to the positive on the 1st sub coil...the negative from the 1st sub coil to the positive on the 2nd sub coil and the negative from the subs 2nd coil to the negative on the amp channel. Hope this helps and if you have any queries just let me know Cheers Kev

So ducati119 any luck / updates ... if you wanna purchase a new amp there is quite a few options for the $300-$400 price range...
