What ever happened to those "stealth" HU's that were available in the late 90's? They were the ones that retracted back into their recessed slot and pulled a plain cover over the face making it look like there was no HU installed. Kenwood had them as the top line models.

A bloke I went to school with last year had a Kenwood one, was pretty new too, so I'd be guessing you can still get em! I think this one the face actually flipped right around when turned off, and the back was blank, looking like no head unit there.

they weren't that popular, good design but i mean most people buy headunits that are flashy, i mean most of em remove the faceplates anyway which pretty much makes em useless to steal unless you can find the faceplate

Sure but when you leave the car, the HU just retracts back into the console and the blank cover comes out. Its a good idea to look like there's nothing there when you're not around.

actually i think looking into a car and not seeing a headunit especially not a factory one is a bit suss. i mean common if you look at the space where the headunit should be and there is a black thing in its place your common theif now would know what it is, and if he doesn't hes a retard. if ya really were worried you could always cut apart you factory unit and juss stick the face over your updated headunit

Well the point of the stealth look is that there is nothing there to tempt a thief so putting a fake HU face on would defeat the purpose of the blank face ( which would be easy to color the same as your console ).

If you wanted stealth, you'd leave a stock locking headunit in the stock location, and have your headunit somewhere else.

If that was also a stealth unit, then you'd be really sneaky!

But then it might look s**t.

i liked that old prelude from autosalon, with the headunit in the sun visor, now that was well done, never see where the headunit is, but yeah if the standard headunit ain't there obviously there is some kinda ugrade

I remember seeing a similar CRX i think. It had the face of the cd in one visor, and the face of the DSP (possibly) in the other. The cd player itself was in the glove box. I Think the tv screen or something was in the dash

yeah the highest alpine cd player retrats in to itself. It looks awesome too.

When i get a job i am gonna save up for darkest legal tint so they just cant see in. But for now i just take the face off and put it in the centre console, anyone got any ideas where it can be hiden. and it cant be too hiden because otherwise when your hidding it it will look sus to people watching.

Cheers

Back to topic...

The once top model kenwood decks (top until about 1 month ago) had two panels. the botom panel folded up onto the screen leaving leavinghte black casing showning. in terms of stealth its the best for it
