hey all,
installing a 4 channel amp into an au fairmont and have just got the doors off to find that the speaker crossover is not to there. Where are they mounted? Couldn't see it, and there is a mass of wires all over the place. any advice appreciated, cheers. |

i think you will find that they will be on the side of the speaker, a small cap and a resistor or inductor on the actual basket is all that is used to generate the roll off frequency.

what speakers? the factors ones don't use cross overs, they use some sort of component, resistor, cap something on the side of the speaker, it's cheaper for them.

Factory speakers dont have crossover - dont they just normally run them off the speakers - or off the head deck - maybe you should just up grade your speakers so as not to blow up the factory speakers which are now amped!!

the factory speakers are fine ampd but there is no crossovers just thought id tell u
 i had a look at mums au just for the fun of it, they do use s**t cheap r c tuning so yea just use the hpf on the amp

Ok time for a laugh, i have no idea what crossovers are. can someone please tell me before they die of laugher?

nah thats cool
a crossover is a device which isolates a frequency. for speakers for instance, if you use a 'High Pass' cross over only high frequencies (ideal for tweeters) can pass through it. Same for subs, they use a low pass crossover to pass only low frequencies to subs. Thats y subs go boom boom and you dont hear voices out of them...these voice frequencies have been removed. The ford ones use a crude capacitor to simulate a crossover. It does an ok job but no where near as accurate as a proper external crossover.

On the EF Fairmont theres a capacitor soldered to the sides of each tweeter. Would be the same for the Au wouldn't it?

thanks for all the replies guys, much appreciated.
the reason i asked the question is because when i looked at the speaker in the door there were only two cables running to it. As it is a splits system shouldn't there be cables running from the speaker to the tweeter with the capacitor somewhere in the mix? i was hoping to run 16awg cables from the amp all the way to each speaker terminal but couldn't see how the speaker in the door was linked to the tweeters. |

From memory in the EF, I think the wires are split under the tweeter plate. One pair to the tweeters which are plugged in, and a pair to the drivers in the door.

In the AU, they look like the picture Kit posted.
There's a capacitor on the side of the tweeter as shown. There is no "crossover" on the main speaker at all. They just let it have the full range sound and rely on it not being able to play the extreme highs and lows anyway. the wiring to the tweeter in the A-pillar, and to the mid range in the door are 2 separate runs. Don't know where they join.

I swear you can't even hear the tweeters in the EF, though maybe thats becasue of the dash mat.

The crossovers that ford use are only 6dB/octave high pass only on the tweeters. The natural roll off is relied upon for the woofers.
If you are using a dash mat it will definitely all but block out the tweeters entirely even with the little holes cut into it.....

Interesting to know the crossovers are there, thanks. Yeh ive just taken my dash matt off and the tweeters in my Ef sound a lot better. Its important tho to have your system tuned well as well tho to get the most out of them
