Im After a handheld CB radio, just for use when going on trips with a group of car, to be able to communicate between ourselves, without having to use mobile phones,
Just wondering what people recommend, dont have an enourmously huge budget, just after something simple that will work http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... %3AIT&rd=1 wonder what people think about that unit, or similar ones?

All depends on how far you anticipate being away from the other cars, and what sorta terrain your going to be driving through really, but as with anything generally you get what you pay for, ive always been a fan of uniden stuff - the radios we use at work are great, but they are around $1000 bucks each hahaha, if your gonna be right near each other in flat terrain a $50 second hand radio would be fine, if theres gonna be distance and through hills and whatnot, i'd be going for something with a bit more power and unfortunately a bigger pricetag...
one other point, if your radio has less power output than someone elses, they will be able to talk right over you.

you will probably be able to get that same one from jaycar, not too sure on price though. i think around 70 each or for the pair cant rememebr.
i bought 2 uniden handheld cbs for $200 included the charger, batterys and headsets. (d**k smith powerhouse) i think they are a very good unit, 5km range line of sight. i use them at work and for cruising and dont have any trouble. |

Id look at uniden, their public stuff is pretty good bang for buck wise with good prices to be had.
I go their so im told 'best' 5W rechargable one for like rrp$400 for good price, just gotta do some searching. Their smaller ones are great prices, ie 55-100 bucks n most come in packs of two, however these are generally 0.5W to 1W so they done offer the same distance and they use batteries, so thats another on going cost i didnt want. I bought a GME and it's a powerful little unit and the battery lasts for nearly 12 hours if you spend time transmitting on it and if you just use it to receive it lasts nearly 24 hours.

I have a couple of the UH-041 hand helds. I use them at work too and get great coverage

id try to get away from 0.5w stuff.
try and atleast go 2w i know uniden have a model thats about $150 and 2w transmit. i personally think anything less is a waste of time and effort.

The 041's are 1 watt, we have a 28 acre site ans they have no trouble getting over it
