I bought 2 front splits and a Head unit.

Both are pioneer.

How do I wire the speakers to the head unit?

Do I use the existing wiring in the door or better wiring for better quality?

Take off the panels, disconnect the stock speakers, connect the new ones.

Don't change the wiring. Regardless of what everyone tells you, they are all brainwashed by the huge amount of s**t information regarding car audio, mostly regarding wire guage.

The stock wiring is fine.

Ah, I read it wrong. My mistake. Depends on the impedance of all the speakers.

Lets say the splits have an impedance of 4ohms, the front door speakers have an impedance of 4ohms, and the output to the front door speakers have an impedance of 4ohms, and can drive nothing lower than that.

If wired in parallel, meaning the split's positive wire spliced into the door speakers pos, and same for the negative. This would mean the total load on the headunit would be 2ohms. Now, if the headunit can push out no lower than 4ohms (which is standard for car audio gear), this would mean the headunit is working much harder than it can cope, which would in time (and not much time), kill the amplifier.

If wired in series, meaning headunit pos to door speaker pos, door speaker neg to split pos, split neg to headunit neg, then the load will be 8ohms. However, they won't be as loud because there is more resistance in the circuit.

So in short, you can wire the splits to the front door speakers, but you need to scope out the resistance factor first, if you are interested in not killing your headunit amplifiers.

.........That's actually what I thought. Split are the actual speaker and the tweeter. lol

Thought I had better run with his view to make it easier to understand.

Anyways, now that you understand what a split actually is, all that has to be done is be wired to the existing door speaker wiring. There's a little bit of info about resistance and speakers for your enjoyment anyways.

id hate to break your heart braidy but most common split setups use a crossover device which theoretically runs both speakers in parallel and both at 4 ohms ;)

Yeah, I know. I installed a set last night. I actually install stereos and am a live sound and lighting engineer, and a record engineer. lol

What I was explaining, was if you were to take a normal pair of speakers and a pair of the components, and try to wire them together.

Hmmm I got the speakers today and I need to buy some more speaker cable.

What should I buy and how much does it cost?

I might totally rewire it but will I have to take the dash out?

im certainly no proffessional.. but a litle laymans advice?
id probly disconnect both ends of the speaker wire, hold both ends and see if u can slide it side to side(not sure if i explained that right.)
then if u can do that. twine and lightly knot the new wire with the old and just pull it through :) haha thats what id do. if that fails? i ask more questions :P

ellaborating on markwrights suggestion lay the two ends over each other like ur connecting them and tape with sparky tape, done this before and works very well as there is minimal increase in size where the two join making it alot easier to pull through some tight spots. and also basic twin core speaker wire from any auto parts shop will do the job perfectly.

Ok Speakers are wired up.

Now the head unit is a problem.

The new unit (Pioneer 6950IB) takes AV style plugs for the speakers and my plug is just plain speaker wire.

Also The ford connector in the dask from the old stereo wont fit into the new one.

Do I have to cut it off and rewire it all to the pioneer one?

That sounds bloody hard, there's like 15 wires.

Ok, the AV style plugs (RCA's) are pre outs for an amplifier.

You might be better of buying a aeropro plug (adaptor) so you don't have to cut wires.

8 speaker wires
1 antenna (might be combined with amp trigger)
1 amp
1 dimming (maybe)
1 earth -ve
1 constant power +ve
1 switched power +ve
1 antenna plug
1 phone input (maybe)

head down your local car stereo mob or even Supercheap and pick up a Ford - pioneer adapter. should be around 30 bucks i think
