i have put 2 130watt high beams into my ef wagon (probably illegal)

the headlamp relay appears to overheat (30 amp bosch) clicking on and off.

could anyone please tell me what rating relay i need to run these suckers and where i might find one?

HOLY CRAP! Aren't standard high beam globes 75w? I guarantee that the lense and housing will melt like a bastard with those suckers in there.

30 amps r u sure bout that? should be able to handle 360 Watts, i'd be checking your cables and alternator as well.

also whats the low beam on those? your already up to 260 so got another 100 to go.

as fordman351 said you'd be liable to melt all plastic or get lots of discolouration very quickly. personally I'd just get some spotties on the front

I used a cheap Jap brand globe in my first car (EA falcon), not realising they were 90w high beam, the buggers damn near melted a hole through the housing haha. I'd hate to imagine what 130w would do to an EF polycarbonate lense :shock:

damn thats not much more, do you know if all the head lights run though this relay got to do the math as if stand if the combined total of the low beams and parkers is above 100 watts (both sides) you'll have to upgrade the relay

I had 90/130 watt bulbs in several of my cars including a EA and EL and had no trouble at all, I didnt change or add any relays.
Never melted a headlight cover.

ok after doing the math 260 watts divided by 12 volts equals 20 something then your circuit breaker is big enough for the job but I would say it is past it's useby date and I would seriously think about replacing it.Actually I would replace it as I have fixed this problem about 50 times unless of course you have a short circuit in the wiring ,in which case fix that first cheers

ok, i'll check the circuit over this afternoon after work. could be a short u reckon??? or the relay is old and f*cked

checked it over, no shorts in the wiring so i assume the relay is past it's use by date, it works for about 10 mins then starts clicking on and off (lights start flashing simultaneously too).

best place to get a higher rated one?

checked jaycar and couldn't find one.

ok you can get a new circuit breaker from Ingram Ashdown or any autoelectrician but before you do that : I don't know if your lowbeam is on at the same time but if it is then your circuit breaker is not big enough .you should have a lobeam relay and a hibeam relay, the circuit breaker supplies power to the relays it is overheating and clicking out ,going open circuit and when it cools down it is supplying power to the relays.the 2x 130 bulbs are making it overheat.the relays are not at fault .what you will have to do is work out the total wattage of all the headlights and divide by 12 this will give you the amperage of the circuit breaker needed.eg. 2x130 +2x60 lobeam =380 watts so divide by 12 and you get 30 and a bit so you need a 35amp or even better a 40 amp circuit breaker and every thing will be cool.if you want to improve the safety of your car you can use 2 circuit breakers 1 for low and 1 for high beam at the appropriate amp rating of course.GOD I hate typing

newbie question: so the breaker is seperate from the relay just behind the battery? where is the breaker? i can verify that the relay (or so it appears to be) is the second from the front (behind the battery) and it is the one clicking on and off. also both high and low are on the same relay/breaker circuit.

sorry for making you all explain this to me..... i'm not slow, just learning thats all.

I had 130w in my car. Definitely brighter, but my headlights started turning a chalk white colour. Not good.
