hey guys...
my mate was gonna get some 18" rims for hes eb xr6 but the insurance company told him its illegal to fit them on.. does anyone know why this is? cheers...

I'm guessing its to do with the law stating you can only go 2" more than the largest rim size available for the sepcific model in question.
Being an EB, The largest was 17" for the GT I think? Cheers - Something along those lines anyway; also works on rim width too I'm told.

I very much doubt they are illegal. I think what they mean is that they won't insure you if you have 18's as I think 17'' are the max they they are willing to go for insurance. afaik

In VIC, your allowed to go by the EB GT, 17"x8", so effectively your allowed 19"x9".
Another example is the AU. My car had 16" Rims, but because the T3 had 18"x8", i'm legally allowed to fit 20"x9", whether they fit on an AU is another problem. And whether the insurance company will allow aftermarket wheels is another problem. If they are telling you, that you can't get those wheels because it is illegal. Find some information and show them, and then see what they say. Or maybe the other reason is that the insurance company don't allow hub adapters/spacers on their client's car. Or the fact that hub adapters are illegal in WA. (Are the wheels your mate is looking at in the same offset?) In NSW, your only allowed to go up by 2" and wider by 1", than your original wheels. (I think) Not sure what the sit is with WA.

ahh ok then cool... coz i got 17"s on my EA and i cant full lock my steering or else my tyres rub so he'd prpobably be better off with 17" im guessin

And whether the insurance company will allow aftermarket wheels is another problem. nup wrong i was told by bob jane they take UR cars max available wheel size and go 2" up. eb GT is nothign like a i6 EB. its just a different car. also if ur au was a forte u wouldnt be allowed 20's it would be like 18" or 19" or whatever was 2" larger than the forte's largest wheel.... trust me i wanted 19" but could only get 17"

bentles, a friend of mine has an EB Ghia V8, and was questioned by the police about his 18"s, previous owner had had EB GT rims (genuine) and had also fitted the tyre sticker for the EB GT's, he pointed out the sticker, and he was let go

the key factor here are he has the sticker, its a V8 and has leather s**t... and also stupid powlice.
if u have a lowered blinged/pimped out eb with 18" rims im sure they will look it up or something.

my mate was gonna get some 18" rims for hes eb xr6 but the insurance company told him its illegal to fit them on.. does anyone know why this is? cheers... the insurence co. in question is more than likley refering to the rolling diameter of the wheel. adr rules state that a vechiles rolling diameter may be increaed by a maximum of 2". when i got my wheels i found a calc. on the net which when i entered all the figures it told me that my rolling diameter was increased by a approx. a 1cm. 18" wheels on your eb are fine but if your still unsure give vic roads a call (pressuming your in Vic.) cheers

Just because someone from Bob Jane says so, it doesn't mean they are right. It looks like the rules have changed slightly. But by this, it means an EB is allowed a 18"x7". For an EL, again your allowed 18"x7". For an AU, your allowed a 19"x8".

yeah in vic the word "series" opens it up, but apparently other states worded differently, and there-fore different law. there was an article in motor magazine bout it awhile ago. i think it was the "hot tuner" issue they put out.

ok mine are 7.5" wide... they dont stick out at all...
why dont vicroads just make it; if it fits without poking out of body, and doesnt rub, its legal... that would be awesome.

This is interesting. The way I read that is the tyre and rim as a combo. So in affect you can go to any rim size as long as the overall rolling diameter is not greater than 15mm. Providing you can find a low profile tyre to maintain the diametre. Remember though, insurance companies have a right to see it differently, so it is always best to check with them first.
