I want to put some 18s on my EL fairmont. Just wondering if they are legal and if the insurance companies would cover them.

18's should be fine...there are heaps of people with 18s on ELs with insurance companies covering their butts. Then again there was something with legalities regarding the maximum tyre size for a certain model...but I am sure it is legal.

phong =P~

Call Vic Roads and your insurance company to confirm.

There's also a Fordmods Doco with State/ADR regulations for modifying your car - check that out too.

Call your insurance company :)
Goto Ebay and buy one of those Tickford stickers that say you can have 17's on there, then you wont have any proiblem going to 18's, maybe :)

some states will let you go 2 inches bigger than the biggest factory option available for YOUR model (just because an xr6 had 16" wheels as an option, doesnt mean a gli could have them). some states are ok as long as the total rolling diameter isnt bigger than stock. (so a 35 series on an 18 would probably be ok where a 65 series 15 was). you can put a new tyre placard on the door, i put an xr8 placard on my ba ghia when i put 20's on. but insurance companies arent stupid beleive it or not, and if push comes to shove they will check with ford to see what was on originally. if you want peace of mind, tell your insurane company about ALL the mods on your car, and if they are not ok with it, find one that is....

well in VIC you can go up to any size as long as the whole size of the rim and tyre isnt bigger, hence the reason for low profile tyres
thats what it says on the Vic Roads website

there is no more of this s**t "you can only go 2 sizes up"

you can have 20in rims but that would mean your running on rubber bands
The bigger the rims, the thinner the profile of the tyre

the whole diametre of the rim and tyre can not be more than 25mm bigger than what is specified on your tyre placard

you follow?

when i spoke to just car insurance they said they will insure my whole car with the mods but not my sound system?
that suprised me
last time they said they will insure everything apart from my rims

when i got my ef insured nrma said they could'nt care if i had 50"rims(slight exagaration) they were only interested in width 7" max. so i lied

Ok so the biggest size on my tyre placard says 215/55/16 so what size can I go upto whilst staying under 25mm?

I think he is saying you can have say 20's for example but the over all size (wheel and tyre) can be up to 25mm's(top of tyre to bottom of tyre) bigger then the largest size on your tyre card. I think :? :?: :?
