Hi there. I live in Perth, and was wondering whether anyone has these size rims on their BA XT or XR6. In my nieve state of mind I purchased the wheels without realising that they are infact illegal (8inches are the max allowed), and was wondering who would insure my car with these rims?? I am staff of RAC and get 50% off, but if the car can get a yellow sticker, which it can with these rims, they can deny any claim, which they will. What are the chances of getting permits for the wheels??

Cheers. Rims come on Monday so any advice would be appreciated.

DPI says it is not roadworthy if the width of your wheels is more than 1 inch more than what the model of vehicle came standard. So for the BA XT they came out with 7 inch. The XR6 which is identical chassis came out with 8 inch so I may be able to argue that point to get to 9 inches, but I still need that extra half an inch to be covered through insurance (they will need copies of permits).

Thought I'd better quote it:

"Rim width must not exceed the maximum rim width specified by the manufacturer by more than 25mm (1") (for passenger vehicles manufactured after 1st January 1973, the manufacturers rim width shall be taken as that specified on the tyre placard)."

the loophole for that is to use the tyre placard (the sticker on your drivers door) from a model with a wider rim

Not sure on WA, but for VIC, they use the wording "must not exceed the maximum rim width specificied by the manufacturer for that given model"

Meaning for a BA, you can go to a GT size + 1" wider.

So in VIC, the largest legal wheel you can put on, is 20" x 9" (I think). That is if GTP wheel is 19" x 8".

I know & have read people with those width rims on a BA. I know for sure an AU runs 8.5" up front and 9.5" at the rear. He is fairly lowered, and only rubs, with a full load, in harsh conditions.

Cheers
