I've dismantled manual & electric mirrors. They're a pain to pull apart and reassemble (especially reattaching the spring). It's far easier to paint them on the car. Are you using a spray gun or pressure pack?
Masking tape and drop sheets don't cost much. You can get a cheap drop sheet for about $2 from Bunnings.

Thats true but you have to mask up 100% or else you will stuff up the job so be extremely careful if you havnt masked up before. Get your self some 2mm tape for all the edges (rubber bits around the mirror eg weather strip) and then get some 2 inch tape overlapping the 2mm tape and then get newspaper and overlap that 2 inch so the door windscreen etc dosnt get any overspray what so ever and a drop sheet for the rest of the car.

why can't you just remove the mirror form the car, then you only need to mask off what you dont want painted. and do it away from the car to make sure there is no overspray..

Yeah i did mirror's on my Fairlane's and my mates Calais, is easier to just remove the whole mirror and mask what you need. I also did all around the window trims etc and it improved the car 100%, grey makes the car look very old and ordinary.
sexyr6 has it right.

i've noticed on a lot of ea-ed mirrors there is a phillips head screw that holds the cover on , located on the underside of the mirror. 15 seconds per side to remove then the cover slips off. aftermarket mirrors the cover clips on,a little harder to remove.
