hey i own a 1995 EF Falcon and i have very small rust dots all over the car and the paint is getting pretty rough on the boot lid ,bonnet, roof and small areas on the drivers side the front bar also has alot of scratches and stone chips
what should i do?
should i just get the car touched up and have it clear coated?
or should i get all the bits resprayed?
and how much do you think it would cost

Hi nlbxr6

Good thread and I am sure everyone appreciates your helpful answers.

I have an eb fairmont V8 which I am thinking about puting a GT body kit on. What is the best way to go about painting it? Do I just get the kit painted to as close a match as possible and then fit everything or do I fit all the kit on the car and then have it painted and blended ? What sort of cost do you think the painting would cost?

Thanks.

sorry micky, i didn't see your repsonse.

We are both in QLD, but there is a fair distance between us, I am in North Qld, so I can't just drop in to see him.

I've done a lot of searching around and found a few other people that he owes money, some significantly more than me even.

I thought it would be odd for someone who helped the forum so much to do something like that... thats why i paid him the money!

If anyone knows of any way I can track him down, feel free to PM me about it. If I get the money back, there will be a substanital cut in it or you!

Heres a tip for anyone with broken plastic bumper mountings.

After trying unsuccessfully to glue my broken BA bumper bar side support back on using plastic epoxy glue I finally worked out how to do it the proper way bogan style. Bought a adjustable temp Hot Air Solder gun off ebay(you can probably use normal heat gun) for $150 bucks, cut up strips of an ice cream container and melted them to reattach the side plastic mount that had broken off. Worked a bloody treat, and is holding there fast unlike the epoxy glue which was useless.

Normally you are meant to use special plastic welding rods but I couldn't be stuffed tracking some down and the plastic in the ice cream container is the same used in BA bumpers(PP) and seems to work brilliantly. If you want to go extra bogan and not fork out for a heatgun, you can probably use a small blow torch for similar effect.

Saved me a couple hundred dollars doing this as I would have had to buy a new bumper and get it resprayed. GO BOGAN POWER!

look at between 5000 & 10000 depending on size of shop and quality of job they do ask to have a look at other jobs they have done and ask around your local area who is good and who isnt.many people dont know but depending on paint brands there is up to 3500 in materials alone also ask what brand of paint they use cheaper products mean cheaper job but also it wont look as good for as long.price will also depend on condition of old paint and to the pro they might see quite a few more dents than most so always tell them what sort of finished product you are looking for
I should also add you must take into cosideration if they need to supply new front screen {almost definatly}new rear and qtr glasses if they damage or break getting them out and the protector moulds upon removal the chrome tends to crinkle and for some reason ford use super strength double sided tape and if moulds arnt replaced have a habit of falling off

$3500 for materials,,WTF that's a little over the top isn't it?
That is definitely a huge mark-up, even if they are using the best quality materials,,over a 200% mark-up I would say.
I bought:
4 liters of top quality 2k pearl base coat
8 liters quality 2k thinner,
4 liters quality 2k primer,
4 liters 2k high build primer/putty,
4 liters Best Quality 2k clear & catalyst,
4 liters of gun Wash (cheap thinner)
1 huge tin body filler(BOG),
1 tube of quick stop putty (pin hole putty)
a truck load of Wet & dry sand paper,
3 Scotch scuffing pads
2 rolls masking tape,
2 Tac rags,
4 liters of wax & grease remover,
a ton of clean rags
about 10 paper cone Paint strainers
two x 1 liter plastic mixing/measuring bowls
4 Gravity gun filters
And a carton of XXXX.
all for just over $1300 and if you bought the same in Acrylic it would be cheaper still.
EDIT: And I still reckon I was overcharged by a couple of hundred. Plus a big Panel shop would buy in bulk & get it all at trade price which is even less again.

Wow,

Which place did you go to get these supplies?

I'd like to paint mine to save a few dollars Autobarn has ripoff prices, I called Protec, just the same, maybe a little cheaper but they sell their stuff in kit packs.

Cheers, Peter
