i reckon as long as it looks neat and goes like a rocket thats all that matters. too many exterior mods can make it look like a drag car wich will attract police.

BenJ, just wondering did you use a clear coat on the handles to prevent scratches?
you can get a large 350g can of automotive clear from supercheap for around $17


FaBz, out of interest, what are you planing to get for your first car?

No mate, no clear. I did put 4 coats of paint on tho. If it goes bad, I will just have to redo them :D

Well either an EF Fairmont or GLi
If im lucky a EL XR6 or BA XT depends on if the olds chip in if im not il be happy with an EF GLi

Your thread has inspired me to get off my a$$ and finish fitting the EF handles and clear indicator repeaters to my red ED XR6. Both look so much better over the originals!

One question for you if I may - did you get much reduction in cabin noise with fitting the EF window rubbers to the doors when doing the mirror conversion? I'm planning on keeping the original mirrors on mine but a reduction in wind noise would be great.

Yes, mate I beleive I did get a reduction in road/wind noise by fitting the EF/EL window rubbers. I will in the future also fit the rear window ones for the same reason.

One point to note however, is that when wet my power windows now need help to get up. Some silicon spray should fix that soon though.

Someone asked me a question about how to remove the strips, so I took a couple of photos to help answer. OK - Here we go.

Pull the rubber back from the strip. Start at the bottom edge of the windscreen where it hangs past the door, and just pull gently.

Keep remove the rubber until it is not covering the strip at all.

Then undo the philips screws under the lip the rubber sits over.

Lastly, remove the little plug indicated by the arrow. Be gentle as you don't want to break it. Then undo the long philips head screw underneath. This will allow enough movement to get the end of the strip out easily.

Installation is just the reverse order. Points to note are that when sliding the rubber back on, don't stretch it as you go.

Boxcar owners should note that the later ED and EF/EL models have a different rubber that fills the gap between the shut door and the windscreen strip. It will be beneficial to install it to reduce wind noise at speed.

Good luck to those who want to fix there own strips.

i like these mods for 1 reason- BUDGET. this fella never claimed he was trying to acheive the best looking ford on this site. nor claimed that when hes finished modding and he pulls up next to a new senator people would be looking at his car instead.

hes put a plan in place from the beginning and stuck to it- dont spend a squillion bucks but still end up with something to be proud of. if half of us started with a plan then the end result would probably be better.
ive dropped easy 20k into my car, and am happy with the results. but it kinda just ended up like that. with a good plan/ budget it would be better- no doubt about it....

good on you mate. keep up the good work.

Well done mate...one thing regardless of budget, I have a lot of respect for a clean / straight car - attention to detail is what I place a lot of value on - and someone that still likes 16's...my hat is off to you :wink:

Have to agree, even if it wasnt to my preferance of looks (which it is) i think benj has done a supurb effort for the budget guidelines ! Also i am a big fan of the ef/el door handles... excellent. Cheers

Hey Guys

Many thanks for the kind words.

I do have to confess tho, that the EB is not exactly as straight or as clean as it left the factory.

In fact it has numerous small dents and scratches all over it. More since the hailstorms we had recently. The car came from out west and is absolutely chockas full of red dust. I just can't keep it clean.

But, I do the best with what I have to work with. Purchasing a new shell is the only way I will get good paint and bodywork as repairing the body is just simply not in my budget.

Oh and keep an eye out in the '6 Cylinder Workshop' forum for a new thread in the next few weeks. I just made a purchase off ebay :D

dont worry about the little dents and scratches mine has a few little dents from the odd a** hole in a car park and light scratches from every day driving but when you give it a good wash it still looks good...
and its hard to keep your every day driver in top nick.
and that hasnt stopped me from doing mods.
and as for mods keep em coming mate good work.

whats next on the list??

Hello Again All

Just a quick update re the later model rubbers and exterior window trims etc.

In the EL mirror conversion, I stated that you need the rear external black door trims from an EF/EL wagon to match the profile of the front ones you put on with the mirrors. An interesting point to note is that my ED Ghia has the same trim profile as the later EF/EL.

As the ED Ghia is my wifes and currently unregistered (and she will never know unless she reads this) :wink: :wink: I attacked it with a screwdriver while she was out. :insane: What I found out was that not only do you need the strip accross the top of the rear door, the black quarter surround is also different and you need that part as well. Not only that but the trim uses a small bolt and nut to attach the rear to the car and the door I have off an EA does not have the hole there for it, so I had to drill it out.


I also swapped out the rubber that starts alongside the windscreen and goes along the edge of the roofline to the C pillar. This rubber is much better designed than the earlier ones and on a cruise on the weekend proved to reduce the road/wind noise quite noticably. Well worthwhile doing and really easy if you can acquire them from either an ED, EF or EL.
