Hi all, im getting new tyres for my XR and i was just wondering what a good size tyre would be. Money is limited to about $200 each tyre but i only need two (thank god) LOL.
ATM i have the factory 15' XR rims with 225/60/15 at the back and 205/60/15 at the front. Would it be worth getting a bigger size such as a set of 245/60/15? I wont be upgrading the rim size for quite some time but i will eventully. What do you guys think?

i think the prob with that would be the side effect on handling. would roll around on the sidewall alot me thinks. jsut goin off wot other ppl have told me int he past

I think you should just stick with the same dimensions if they work good, I dunno waht it would improve if you change the size?
One of the companies had a deal going $20 a tyree for every tyre traded in... I got my last back tyres for $90 or so a piece, and Ive got the Fairmont Ghia mags (Turbo Blades) or whatever... Just save the money that you would spend on bigger tyres, and save up for some mags

Oh but the mags i want to get are way more unpractical that the tyres that i want.
But yeah i wouldnt mind some decent mags but im not overly concerned about the ones i have atm. So you think just stick to the 225/60's then? would prolly make sense in the end.

Well, I would put safety as the only problem in the question... try going to a tyre shop, and ask them if it will put the tyres under pressure, or if it is dangerous.

Yeah i have to go do all that on Monday, im looking at a few different places so hopefully i hear some different opinions etc....
But i would of thought that having 245's wouldnt make much more difference to the negative safety factor of the car. Doesnt having more rubber on the road increase grip and handling thou?

yeah, but you need it to stay on the rim... like I said, just ask the dudes at the shop... I could be wrong.

Okay yeah, i didnt think about that, i supposed that would be of some concern when going to a larger sized tyre.

I think 245's might be a tad wide for your wheels, and plus you would have to probabky go down a profile to get the same overall dimater too.

Lower profiles are for handling.. I have 245s and it's hard to get a good start off the line. If you are really have trouble, by all means go for fatter tyres however it will sacrifice on handling. Always a sacrifice. Alternatively, you could lower the pressure of the rears..

I don't know why you'd go for a taller tyre? ie 245/60
As you go wider in tyre you need to go lower in profile % to keep the same ratio. 245/50/15 would be better. But will not fit your rims safely. Stick with good quality 225's. |

Yeah sorry my bad i wasnt completly sure about the size of profile i would need, hence the reason i just said 245/60's? (no idea really)LOL.
I was thinking of just getting the same size, i have about $150-200 to spend on one tyre and i need two so i was thinking of going for some decent ones such as Bridgestone, Pirrelli, Firestone which ever works best. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction thou.

Wider tyres will give you greater traction in dry and worse traction in wet. This is due to the greater distance that water in the middle has to get pushed to the edge.
Wider tyres can also be slightly more prone to tyre roll although getting lower profiles corrects this. As far as I know thats about as simple as I can put it. Stick with 225s........if you really wanna spend more, get a softer compound.
