Hey all.
I have a "new" engine for my EA wagon. Am having it modified to give me a lot more Grunt. What sort of strengthening would be required, esp. to rear of car, so it doesnt flex so much with the extra torque? Cheers |

How much more power are you talking about?
A bloke at work bought an EA fitted with a 351 Windsor, now stripped for the parts, and that wasn't having issues. Was a sedan though. But EA wagon shape isn't much different to any other E-Series wagons, and there's a few members whove put some power through them... |

There was a massive improvement in structural rigidity between the EA and EB, although they are the same basic body shell. There was even improvements made between the EA1 and EA2. Although I have an EA2, I can feel it when I push the old girl hard through corners, and thats on standard wheels and tyres. I have a set of 17x8 CSA alloys and low profiles, but dont have them on yet as I am waiting on lowered springs (have to save for each item), and the wheels wont look good at standard ride height. But anyway, I imagine the grippier tyres will magnify the problem. Add that to a bit more grunt, and I imagine the drive will become quite entertaining... |

Yeah I wouldn't be so worried about chassis flex.
Be worried when your doors start popping open around corners. AFAIK the E-Series are a fairly 'tight' body, especially compared to similar era-commos (f**k, even the later model ones). Probably more important would be to try and find a swaybar for the rear end of that thing.

Am doing up an EB 4.0l for it. Dunno how much I can get out of it without making it undriveable around town. Maybe what I imagine feels like flexing is the rear suspension moving around like Steady ED is suggesting. So basically, the consensus is that the body will be ok with a bit more torque and more grip on the road...? |

I'd say the suspension bushes at the rear are worn out. how many K's has the car done in total?

hmm yeah i don't know, there plently of EA's with more K's then that getting around. unless the car has major stuctural damage then it should be fine with the hot EB engine in it. I would definatly say it would be the back suspension. my only suggestion would be to take it to a suspension place and get them to check it out. The falcon bodies are generally quite tough

if your going to have an amount of power that will require body stiffening, id suggest getting the chassis stitch welded, most other things (like strut braces) will only transfer the energy from one place to another (with the another then flexing instead)
having said that its not really necesary to strengthen the falcon chassis in the first place, a lot of members here are pushing around insane power figures with no ill effects (if anything driving like a crazy person would loosen a car up quicker than anything)

I plan on doing all the bushes anyway. Might see if I can get hold of the King Spring leaves as well, when I have it lowered.
