ok so i just got a bootlip spoiler and an eager to put it on but the paint is cracked and the wrong colour how do i go about preping it for paint please help thanks

it needs to be rubbed back, primed ,rubbed back again then painted. maybe polished at the end. how far u rub back depends on the damage to the paint. sandpaper grit depend on the damage u are repairing, deep chips, dents etc.
what colour are u painting it? |

u need to rub it back past the cracking paint, usually i strip the whole spoiler back to rubber using 80grit, then 180, then 320 wet. repair anything that needs doing, prime and paint using some flex aid in the 2pack paint to let it have some give. ive done a couple of ea-ed and a couple of escort ones.
last escort spoiler i ended up modifying and glassing it to stop the flex, and subsequent cracking. |

Please note that it is made of rubber.
This means that if you paint if off the car and then try to fit it, as you tighten the bolts up it will flex and the paint will crack. Do all the prep work off the car, then fit it before painting it. You will need to mask off the boot and back of the car etc, but at least it will have a complete finish. Oh, and for a DIY job, there is nothing wrong with Acrylic. Easy to get, and reasonably forgiving in application. Worst case, you have to sand it back and paint it again. I have painted many parts with rattle cans over the years, and only recently have started to learn and have a go with a spray gun. But still using Acrylic. Cheers BenJ

acrylic is easier to use but on rubber it wont last very long, better off doing what elf100capri suggest and doin it properly with a 2 pac, is more durable and will last much longer than acrylic...
