not sure if this is the right area to post this but here goes. i wired up a neon using the wires from the little light at the ashtray (brown and black wires). this is in an ef gli. now silly me i accidentally let the 2 wires touch and it sparked and now i have no brake lights. everything else works except for the brakes. i double checked fuses and i replaced both bulbs but still no luck. i also fitted a new brake light switch. im assuming its the wiring perhaps. any ideas?

this thread would go in the "exterior mods" section.. suppose it could also go in the "interior mods" or the "electrical mods"

Chances are your brake lights wern't working before the neon mod,

Most likely culprit is the brake switch itself! these are prone to dying

Just look in the technical documents on the top right of the screen, and select 'common problems'

Also the brake light circuit is different to the parkers/interior light curcuit
so if you have the ashtray light working.. then... look elsewhere!

your best bet is to purchase an aftermarket switch from repco (around 9-11bux)

I wouldn't go original elquipment as.... well they break!

my brake lights stopped workin too, went to an auto elec, 10 mins and $14 later it was fixed, i know its an easy job but he was round the corner from me and i didn't like the idea of drivin with no brake lights. Everytime i was brakin with a car behind me i was sh*ttin myself.

Ok, now that its dark.
go out to the car, turn Ign. on...WITHOUT parkers on

Press the brake pedal.... Do your Dash lights come on? and or parkers at the front when the pedals depressed?

If so... Take out the rear Globes and put in the twin filament Brake/Parker Globes. 5/14watt

Hope this helps!

Andrew

Pull the brake lt switch plug, turn IGN on, check with your multimeter that one of the pins has 12v present - if not then the problem is upstream, check the stop lamps fuse.
If so, as mentioned, short the plug and make sure all 3 brake lights are on. If so, switch is dodgy.

Other than that, there's not a lot left to check.
